The design has been repeatedly imitated in the years since, but this is the genuine article—an American-made 1000D Domestic Cordura Construction bag with 8″ looped nylon handles, reinforced triple-stitched seams, and our funnel-filler opening for easy, precision filling.

As seen during the Sprint Carry event at the Games, the Feed Sack’s™ long, easy-grip handles enable athletes to quickly pick the weight up and swing it efficiently over the head or around the neck into carry position. The points where the handles meet the corners of the bag are reinforced with nylon webbing, and the zipper features a polyurethane backer and covering to improve flexibility, close off spillage, and prevent direct contact with the user’s back. The result is a sandbag that’s both easy to manage and comfortable to run with. It’s also equally suited for squatting movements, thrusters, clean and press, and more.

We’re offering the Rogue Feed Sack™ in two sizes:

 • 50LB Capacity*: 12″ tall x 29″ long
 • 100LB Capacity*: 15″ tall x 35″ long

Where speed and performance matter most, the Rogue Feed Sack™ delivered in its introductory use at the CrossFit Games, and it’s now available to the general public for the first time. This updated design features (2) looped nylon handles, measuring 8″ long x 2.75″ wide, and optimized for grab-and-go training. Athletes are able to quickly swing the Feed Sack™ into a comfortable sprint-carry position on the back/neck. It’s also a functional implement for squats, thrusts, clean and press, and more.

All Rogue Feed Sacks™ are made with pride in Columbus, Ohio, USA, and are available in two sizes, with max capacities of 50LB and 100LB (using dry play sand). Each bag is constructed from 1000D Domestic Cordura Construction, with triple stitched seams and a funnel filler opening for clean, customized filling. The zipper features a polyurethane backer, creating additional flexibility and strength, along with a covering that keeps the bag sealed and prevents direct contact between the zipper and the user’s back during a workout.

Transform Your Physique: The Ultimate Body Recomposition Guide https://www.garagegymreviews.com/body-recomposition https://www.garagegymreviews.com/body-recomposition#respond Mon, 01 Jul 2024 17:59:30 +0000 https://www.garagegymreviews.com/?p=193225 feeding or another method, you can bolster your fat-loss and muscle-building effort simply by skipping breakfast and reducing your eating window. Fasting promotes autophagy2—a natural …]]> As someone who once tipped the scales at an all-time high of 285 pounds, I know the challenges and triumphs of transforming your body. After all, it’s no easy feat to gain muscle or lose body fat—let alone do both simultaneously. However, after experimenting with tracking my caloric intake, setting (and adjusting) my macros, and creating a well-balanced weight training and cardio program, I learned many important lessons about the power of body recomposition.

RELATED: Macros For Fat Loss and Muscle Gain

Also known as “recomp,” this transformative process involves more than just losing weight—it’s about shedding fat and building muscle to achieve a lean, strong physique. As a certified personal trainer (CPT) who has helped beginners and experienced lifters gain muscle mass and reshape their bodies, I’ll give you the tools to successfully navigate your own body recomposition journey by providing practical tips, scientific insight, and personal experience to help you achieve your dream physique.

What Is Body Recomposition?

Body recomposition refers to the process of simultaneously losing fat and building muscle. Unlike traditional weight loss, which focuses exclusively on reducing your total body weight, body recomposition aims to improve your body composition by increasing lean muscle mass while decreasing your body fat percentage. This results in a more toned, muscular physique—even if the scale doesn’t change significantly.

RELATED: Guide to Bulking and Cutting

You’ll often see the term “recomp” used in the bodybuilding community, as athletes typically implement “bulking” and “cutting” phases during the offseason. Bulking involves eating in a caloric surplus and following a high-volume strength training program to add lean mass. During contest prep, athletes then go on a “cut,” eating fewer calories and performing more cardio to reduce body fat and get stage-ready.

How Does Body Recomposition Work?

You must follow a few key principles to achieve body recomposition. First, you must engage in resistance training to stimulate muscle growth—aka muscle protein synthesis1 (MPS)—the process where your body repairs and builds new muscle tissue.

I recommend focusing on compound exercises like squats, deadlifts, presses, and row variations to get the most bang for your weightlifting buck. These types of strength training exercises involve multiple muscle groups and have been shown to be the most effective for building muscle and overall strength.

RELATED: 12 Benefits of Strength Training

Secondly, you must get your nutrition right. This can be quite tricky, as fat loss requires a caloric deficit. However, you must consume sufficient protein to support your muscle-building efforts. I typically aim for around 0.8 to 1 gram of protein per pound of body weight per the Recommended Daily Allowance (RDA) from the Food and Nutrition Board.

In addition, you’ll likely need to incorporate some form of cardiovascular exercise into your fitness routine. Not only is this necessary for your overall health and wellness, but it’ll help increase your total energy expenditure—aka burn more calories, which is essential when you’re whittling down your body fat percentage and don’t want to cut your calorie intake even further.

Body Recomposition Plan: How to Get Started

Let’s say you’re carrying around 20 pounds of “extra” body fat. You want to chisel away that extra fluff, pack on some lean muscle mass, and feel confident about taking your shirt off at the beach.

But where do you begin?

Based on my experience and the science of building muscle and losing fat, here’s how to formulate a body recomp game plan.

1. Set SMART Goals

Setting specific, measurable, achievable, relevant, and time-bound (SMART) goals is imperative, no matter your mission. Remember, the body recomp process is just that—a process. By its very nature, it’ll take time to see significant changes.

Start by setting short-term goals, such as reducing your body fat percentage by 1% in two weeks or increasing your bench press total by 20 pounds in one month. Because body recomp involves reducing your body fat and preserving (or building) lean muscle, using tools like body fat calipers, bioelectrical impedance scales, or DEXA scans to measure your body composition metrics can help ensure progress toward your goals.

2. Create Your Nutrition Plan

What you put into your body is just as important (if not more) than how you move your body. While there are many types of diets, the most important nutritional principle for body recomp is to follow a high-protein diet that supports muscle protein synthesis and prevents muscle loss during a calorie deficit. In addition, you’ll need to maintain a slight calorie deficit to lose fat.

Cooking honey butter pork chops from the Home Chef meal delivery service.

Depending on your food preferences and tolerances, structuring your meals around protein sources like chicken, lean cuts of beef, and fish will provide your body with the building blocks necessary to grow new muscle tissue. You can also supplement with your favorite protein powder to hit your daily protein goal, which should be around 1 gram of protein per pound of body weight.

RELATED: How Much Protein Do I Need?

As for the other macros, include a balance of healthy fats from avocados, nuts, and eggs and “clean” carbs from potatoes, sweet potatoes, vegetables, and rice to fuel your workouts and refill your glycogen stores post-workout. As you lean out, you will likely need to reduce your calorie intake without sacrificing your protein intake, so be mindful of what changes you make and how they may affect your performance and physique.

3. Structure Your Strength Training Routine

Now that you’ve set your goals and nutrition plan, it’s time to focus on the fun part of body recomposition: your workout routine!

With hypertrophy taking precedence over muscular strength or endurance, you should incorporate a mix of weightlifting and bodyweight exercises to build muscle. Focus on compound movements like squats, deadlifts, and bench presses that target multiple muscle groups. Most importantly, continuously challenge your muscles by implementing progressive overload—gradually increasing the weight, reps, or intensity of your exercises.

RELATED: What Is Progressive Overload?

As far as structure, you can go about it in a number of ways. The bro split workout provides the ideal pathway for highly focused sessions if you enjoy training one body part at a time. If you have less time to train, the efficient nature of a push-pull-legs routine may work better for you. Or, you can try other workout splits that better suit your schedule and fitness goals.

4. Schedule Cardio Sessions

Let’s be honest: Most people don’t look forward to cardio workouts. At the same time, there’s no doubt you need to break a sweat and get your heart rate up to support your fat-loss efforts and improve your cardiovascular health.

Luckily, you don’t necessarily have to spend an hour on the treadmill to reap the benefits of cardio. High-intensity interval training (HIIT) can be particularly effective for burning calories in a short amount of time, as you’ll alternate between periods of intense exercise and rest periods.

hiit workouts running

You can easily implement this on a treadmill by adjusting the speed or incline settings. Or, you can do a HIIT rowing workout where you do short “sprints” of 30 to 45 seconds, followed by an equal amount of reset time for multiple rounds. I recommend at least one or two HIIT cardio workouts per week, along with at least one or two low-intensity cardio sessions, which can include an outdoor walk or steady-state session

Body Recomposition Tips and Tricks

As someone who went from being overweight and undermotivated to being in shape and inspired, I’ve gleaned some useful lessons. Let’s be clear: body recomposition is not easy, but implementing these six tips may help make the journey less frustrating and more enjoyable.

1. Vary Your Training Routine

It’s all too easy to fall into the trap of performing the same workout routine. As much as I enjoy crushing squats and deadlifts regularly, I have to switch things up to keep from getting bored. I do this by trying variations of my favorite exercises, incorporating different tempos, or implementing superset workouts to give my body and mind a new stimulus.

RELATED: Tempo Training

2. Implement Intermittent Fasting

Plenty of anecdotal and scientific evidence supports the efficacy of intermittent fasting (IF). Whether you opt for time-restricted feeding or another method, you can bolster your fat-loss and muscle-building effort simply by skipping breakfast and reducing your eating window. Fasting promotes autophagy2—a natural process where your cells clean out damaged components and regenerate new ones.

Plus, IF increases the production of brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), which has been associated with improved cognitive performance3. During my body recomp, I experimented with various forms of IF, including OMAD (one meal a day). You can try different protocols to see which works best for you based on your fitness goals and lifestyle.

A word of caution: IF is not meant to be a starvation diet. Those with a history of disordered eating should consult with a doctor or dietician before implementing any form of fasting.

3. Use Supplements Strategically

While the best way to fuel your body is via whole foods, supplements certainly have their place in a well-formulated nutrition plan. Here are a few I’d recommend including in your stack:

An image for is protein powder good for you
 • Whey protein powder: Can be mixed into smoothies, shakes, or other recipes for a convenient source of quick-digesting protein.
 • Creatine: The most-researched sports supplement of all time helps increase muscle mass and strength, as well as force production.
 • BCAAs: Branched-chain amino acids support muscle growth, performance enhancement, and post-exercise recovery.

RELATED: Best Supplements For Muscle Growth

4. Take Progress Photos

The scale isn’t necessarily the best indicator of progress, and you may not see significant changes in your overall body weight depending on the amount of muscle and fat-free mass you carry. So, taking progress pictures allows you to see how your body has changed.

Take photos from several angles (front, back, side, and full body) to get an accurate gauge of your progress. Most importantly, take them from the same angles weekly (or bi-weekly) so you can directly compare them to your previous shots.

As the saying goes, “The mirror never lies.”

5. Meal Prep

Failing to prepare is preparing to fail. Rather than leaving your nutrition up to chance, stay ahead of the game by making your meals in advance. Throw some chicken or a protein of your choice into a crockpot with some veggies and let it simmer away during your workday. Or, dedicate some time every week to preparing meals for the coming days.

6. Have an Accountability Partner

Even if you’re self-motivated, there may be days when you just don’t feel like hitting the gym. There may also be times when you’re tempted to plow through some Oreos or a pint of ice cream. In those moments, having someone you can vent to or help motivate you to stay on track can make all the difference between making progress and taking a step back.

An accountability partner doesn’t necessarily have to join you for every gym session or be available 24-7. However, having at least one reliable person who can push you or be a sounding board during difficult times is one of the best ways to remain on the right path.

Body Recomposition: Final Thoughts

Transforming your physique is undoubtedly one of the most difficult wellness tasks you can undertake. You must be diligent with your diet. You must be disciplined with your training and dedicated to doing the little things like foam rolling and stretching so your body can recover.

Ironically, while it’s called body recomposition, the process is as mentally taxing as it is physical. It takes incredible energy and effort to build muscle and lose fat simultaneously. It also requires patience and persistence. So, as you navigate your recomp journey, look at it as an opportunity to learn how reshaping your mind can help you reshape your body.

Body Recomposition: FAQs

How long does body recomposition take?

The body recomposition process can take several months, if not longer. Depending on factors like diet, training, and your starting body fat percentage, it may take anywhere between three to six months to see noticeable changes.

Is body recomposition cutting or bulking?

Body recomposition is neither cutting nor bulking. It’s a hybrid process that allows you to lose fat and build muscle rather than focusing exclusively on a single goal.

How many calories should I eat for body recomposition?

Eat your maintenance calories or a slight caloric deficit (200 to 500 calories below maintenance) for body recomposition. Just make sure to consume enough protein to support muscle protein synthesis and preserve (or add) lean body mass.

How does body recomposition work?

Body recomposition involves performing consistent resistance training to build muscle, consuming sufficient protein to support muscle growth and recovery, and maintaining a balanced diet promoting fat loss.

What is the ideal macronutrient ratio for body recomposition?

An ideal macronutrient ratio for body recomposition is around 40% protein, 30% fats, and 30% carbohydrates. While that’s on the lower end of the scale for carbs, these ratios generally fall in line with the USDA Acceptable Macronutrient Distribution Ranges (AMDR). However, you can tailor these ratios based on your body type, fitness goals, and metabolic rate.

RELATED: Air vs Magnetic Rowing Machine …]]> We’re excited to say we’ve tested the newest ski machine on the home gym equipment market. For years, the only worthwhile ski machine was the Concept2 SkiErg, but after our Torque Relentless Ripper review you may be considering otherwise. Plus, I’ll have a side-by-side comparison later in this review.

If you’re not familiar with ski machines, you’re not alone—they are not quite as popular as the best treadmills for home gyms, elliptical trainers, or rowing machines. Ski machines mimic the upper-body dynamics of Nordic skiing (specifically double poling and skate skiing techniques) and offer a killer workout. I can say that with full confidence because I was on my high school’s Nordic racing team and still ski recreationally as an adult—it’s a taxing full-body sport.

You Can Trust Our Cardio Experts

Our team of expert product testers at Garage Gym Reviews have decades of experience in the fitness industry. We’re a group of athletes, certified personal trainers, and nutrition coaches. We’re also a group of people committed to finding the best deals and investments in health and wellness.

For this Torque Relentless Ripper review, GGR founder and OG product tester Coop Mitchell assessed, scored, and reviewed the ski machine using our in-depth fitness equipment testing methodology. He was tasked with scoring a variety of categories on a scale of 1 to 5 including durability, ergonomics, and assembly, to name a few.

A Quick Look at the Torque Relentless Ripper

Torque Fitness has a ton of strength and conditioning equipment to outfit your home or garage gym. You can find all the essentials like squat racks, barbells, and functional trainers.

However, you may be most familiar with Torque from the brand’s more unique and innovative pieces of gym equipment like the cutting-edge sled we featured in our Torque TANK Sled review, TANK M1 review, or the endless rope trainer we tested for the Relentless Rope Trainer review

Before You Buy

 • The Relentless Ripper ski machine can be mounted to a squat rack or wall, but the wall mount is an extra $100.
 • The monitor on the Ripper is simple and straightforward but doesn’t offer connectivity like the PM5 monitor on the Concept2 SkiErg.
 • Watch Coop’s full video review for his callout on the sharp edge to the pulley when returning to the top range of motion.

Is the Torque Relentless Ripper Worth It?

The Torque Relentless Ripper ski machine is worth it for folks who want a low-impact cardio machine that won’t eat up any of your valuable floor space. The Ripper ski machine is a power rack-mounted (or wall mounted for an additional $100) cardio machine that does not have a floor stand or floor mount.

RELATED: Power Rack Attachment Guide

It’s priced very similarly to the Concept2 SkiErg, which is the most comparable workout experience we’ve had to the Torque Relentless Ripper. The Ripper is $999 and the SkiErg is $850. While there is a slight price difference, Coop thinks the Torque option is worth it for folks truly limited on space or who don’t want to sacrifice more floor space.

Additionally, speaking from personal on-snow skiing experience, the Torque Relentless Ripper could be worth it for competitive high school or college Nordic skiers. In the off season, you’ll be able to practice your double poling position for classic (or V2 and V2 alternate technique for skate), producing force from the floor, and increasing endurance during this up-and-down movement.

Double poling is certainly not the most-used technique in Nordic skiing, but it’s an area many skiers struggle with. It’s typically used on downhills, flat areas, or slight uphills with fast conditions. Double poling is sort of like a high gear and many athletes lose speed while utilizing this technique.

Working Out on the Torque Relentless Ripper

Coop says his favorite and preferred piece of conditioning equipment is the Concept2 SkiErg. “If I had to choose just one piece of cardio equipment at my house, I’d probably choose the ski machine. I like it that much and use it the most,” says Coop.

Man using Torque Relentless Ripper ski machine with a split stance

Overall, Coop had a positive experience testing the Torque Relentless Ripper for a handful of short workouts. He notes the SkiErg being the gold standard for ski machines, but the Torque is a close competitor.

“Ski machines don’t have a ton of competition in the fitness space, so I was excited to test the Torque ski machine” he says. “It takes up no floor space, the pull is smooth, and the resistance is more customizable for all fitness levels.”

Footprint and Portability

When it comes to footprint, the Torque Relentless Ripper won’t be taking up an inch of floor space in your home gym. It measures 24 inches long, 21 inches wide, and 39 inches tall, but it will be either mounted on your power rack or on a wall using the wall mounting bracket. The Ripper ski machine earns a 5-out-of-5-star rating in our footprint and portability category.

Durability and Construction

For durability and construction, Coop was impressed during his trial workouts with the Relentless Ripper. He scored this category 4.5 out of 5 stars. “It feels very similar to the Concept2, which is a beast,” he says.

Coop likes the heavy-duty powder coat finish and over-built construction. “I have no doubt this thing is going to last,” he says.

It’s a simple device, which we think is good. In Coop’s full video review, he opens the shrouding of the machine to reveal shock cords (which control the return of the handles) and the belt drive system. In our experience, belt drive systems last a long time and have little to no maintenance.

Man in bottom range of motion while using Torque Relentless Ripper ski machine

Additionally, the magnetic resistance on this is super smooth, which means you’re not going to get a ton of jostling or feedback from each pull. “The smoothness from the magnetic resistance is really nice and a bit different than the Concept2,” says Coop.

Adjustments and Ergonomics

When we judge a cardio machine on ergonomics and adjustments, we’re looking at a product to see if it can be used by a wide variety of people (both weight and height).

Coop found that mounting the Relentless Ripper to the top of his power rack gave him plenty of overhead space to work out on the ski machine with full range of motion. He notes that the Concept2 SkiErg is about 8 feet tall, so home gym owners may want to consider mounting their Torque ski machines around the same height to mimic the feel of the gold standard skier.

The Torque scored high at 4.5 out of 5 stars in this category because home gym owners won’t be limited by the equipment itself—you’ll be limited by your own ceiling height.

Plus, there is a manual lever to adjust the magnetic resistance on the ski machine. Coop says compared to the Concept2 SkiErg, the Torque offers a larger range of resistance (both at the lower and top end of resistance).

Torque Relentless Ripper ski machine resistance lever

That means beginners, kids, and teenagers will be accommodated on this ski machine with lighter starting resistances and stronger folks will also have enough resistance at the top end of the spectrum to get a challenging workout.

Technology and Conveniences

Don’t expect a ton of tech features on the Torque Relentless Ripper. It earns a 3.5 out of 5 stars in this category. The monitor is simple and displays workout metrics like time, strokes per minute, watts, calories, and distance. Coop likes the fact the simple LCD screen has an orange backlight, two easy-to-use buttons, and it folds away when not in use.

 • For serious athletes

Pros & Cons

Pros

 • Strapless handles with texture that doesn’t soak up sweat
 • Durable and well-built monitor
 • High-strength cords provide options for different pulling methods
 • Can be free-standing or wall-mounted

Cons

 • Geared more towards serious athletes
 • Would like to see additional handle options
 • Would like to see more pulleys

Bottom Line

Adapting key rowing machine elements like flywheel resistance and a state-of-the-art PM5 Performance Monitor, the SkiErg turns the athlete’s orientation vertical, simulating the movements of real cross-country skiing with both double-pole and classic alternating arm technique.

Now that you’ve heard all about the Torque Relentless Ripper, let’s compare it to the Concept2 SkiErg. For a long time, the SkiErg was the only solid ski machine on the market. The Torque ski machine is certainly the only competitor our team has tested that has come close.

Concept2 is a well-known and well-respected company. The brand manufactures heavy-duty and long-lasting conditioning equipment and doesn’t even dabble with strength equipment like barbells and dumbbells.

In addition to Concept2 making quality equipment, you can also buy individual replacement parts for nearly every single component on the SkiErg if something were to happen. The frame has a 5-year warranty, but folks appreciate being able to make quick fixes themselves (especially when the warranty runs up).

The way both machines function is quite similar, but it’s worth noting the handful of differences in the specs: The Concept2 SkiErg is quite a bit larger and will take up some amount of floor space. The monitor on the SkiErg has more functionality—it’s compatible with third-party training apps like Strava and you can upload your training results to a Concept2 community leaderboard.

Lastly, the resistance is different: The Toque ski machine uses magnetic resistance (which is typically silent and smooth) while the Concept2 SkiErg is designed with air resistance (which is quite a bit louder and not as smooth). Shipping was quick and easy to GGR HQ with no issues. However, once it was out of the box, there were some complications trying to put it together and our assembly experts didn’t think the instructions were super clear.

There are a few main pieces including the strut, lower triangle with the console, the adjustment lever, and the ergonomic grip handles with tie-offs. Keep in mind the assembly process includes threading the ropes through the pulleys.

At the time of writing this review, the Torque Relentless Ripper has two customer reviews, both of which were awarded 5 out of 5 stars. We plan to update this section when more customers share their input and real experience with the ski machine.

Final Verdict of Our Torque Relentless Ripper Review

If we’re going to be honest—which is baked into our code of ethics at GGR—the Concept2 SkiErg is the gold standard for ski machines. That said, if you’ve been wanting a ski machine but just can’t compromise the floor space in a small home gym, the Torque Relentless Ripper is an excellent choice for people who are limited on floor space.

The Torque ski machines function a lot like the Concept2 SkiErg and are a worthy competitor—Coop thinks it comes down to how much space you have in your gym.

Highly active teenagers or those who engage in extracurricular sports likely have high protein needs, but meeting these needs on a teenage schedule with a teenage palate can be easier said than done.

Obviously getting in the right amount of protein from whole foods is always the way to go, but protein powder may be appropriate in some cases. However, we can’t play as fast and loose with the quality of the brand we choose as we would with adults, since teens are still vulnerable in their stage of growth and development.

With that in mind, you should always check with your pediatric healthcare provider before adding a new dietary supplement to your child’s regimen. However, our team of experts came up with a list of brands that are likely safe and appropriate for the needs of teenage athletes.

Best Protein Powder for Teens

Best Protein Powder for Teens Overall: Transparent Labs 100% Grass-Fed Whey Isolate

Good for: People looking for one of the cleanest and high-quality whey protein brands out there

Best Overall

Transparent Labs 100% Grass-Fed Whey Protein Isolate

GGR Score: 4.2 starstarstarstarstar

Product Highlights

 • High-quality whey protein isolate
 • 28 grams of protein per serving
 • 15 flavors to choose from
 • $1.99 per serving

Pros & Cons

Pros

 • High-quality protein
 • No artificial sweeteners, food dyes, or preservatives
 • Lots of flavors to choose from
 • Good customer reviews
 • Whey isolate may be easier to digest for some people

Cons

 • Price per serving on the high end

Bottom Line

Our testers love Transparent Labs 100% Grass-Fed Whey Protein Isolate because we know exactly what's in it, and almost every flavor we've tried is a 5 out of 5 on taste. Yes, it's a little more expensive than other protein powders but you get what you pay for.

In terms of whey isolate protein powder, this is one of the cleanest products that you can find, and it comes from a reputable brand, which is why we named it the best overall protein powder for teens. In addition to being sourced from grass-fed cows, their whey isolate is also free from hormones, pesticides, dyes, artificial sweeteners, and preservatives.

RELATED: Whey Protein Isolate vs Concentrate

Transparent Labs also shows the weight of each ingredient it contains right on the label, which speaks to the brand’s name of transparency. If you’re a parent of a student athlete, this should put your mind at ease of what your teen is consuming, especially considering the protein powder is third-party tested by Informed Choice. This is also why we gave it a 5 out of 5 rating for third-party testing.

Now, let’s talk about grass-fed whey protein supplements. The claim that grass-fed whey contains better amino acids than regular whey hasn’t been proven to be accurate, which makes sense since it hasn’t been proven that a cow’s diet can affect the quality of its milk.

transparent labs whey isolate being scooped

So, if you’re looking for the best for your teen, don’t sweat thinking the best whey for them has to be grass fed. What we have noticed, though, is that grass-fed whey carries a significant difference in terms of taste.

Anthony O’Reilly, GGR performance editor and expert product tester, confirms this sentiment and rated it a 5 out of 5 for taste after trying the Peppermint Hot Chocolate, a seasonal flavor. “It tastes exactly as the flavor describes,” Anthony reports. “All that’s missing is the marshmallows and whipped cream!”

We did give it a 5 out of 5 for formulation as the supplement only contains five ingredients but includes 28 grams of protein per serving. Transparent Labs products are expensive by market average, and their protein is no different as this one is nearly $2 per serving. Thus, we gave it a 3 out of 5 for price even if the value likely justifies the cost.

Best Clean Protein Powder for Teens: Legion Whey+

Good for: Those looking for a protein that contains zero artificial ingredients

Best Clean

Legion Whey+

GGR Score: 4 starstarstarstarstar

Product Highlights

 • Sourced from small dairy farms in Ireland
 • Over 5 g of BCAAs per serving
 • Non-GMO and animal welfare approved
 • Third-party tested for banned substances

Pros & Cons

Pros

 • Low in carbs and fat
 • Natural ingredients
 • Money-back guarantee
 • Made with ethically-sourced milk
 • Lots of flavor options

Cons

 • Comparably high cost per serving
 • May be clumpy when mixed
 • Some flavors have mixed reviews

Bottom Line

Legion Whey+ is a clean, sustainable protein powder that also is macro-friendly and a great option for anyone looking for a clean protein supplement. Many of our testers have brought this with their own money because they love the taste and easy mixability.

Legion is an American brand that sources its whey from Irish dairy farms. One of the reasons I’m a personal fan of Whey+ from Legion Athletics is that they never seem to run out of fun flavors to offer. My personal taste preferences aside, though, as a registered dietitian I love that Legion has no artificial sweeteners, dyes, fillers, or other junk.

A taste test of Legion’s Cinnamon Cereal flavor by our expert team gave Legion a 4.5 out of 5. This flavor delivers essential amino acids as well as a nostalgic taste of Cinnamon Toast Crunch. Anthony O’Reilly, GGR performance editor and certified nutrition coach, tried it and says, “The flavor is there, but could be stronger. It’s like when you’re eating a freshly poured bowl of Cinnamon Toast Crunch, but the milk hasn’t soaked up the taste of the cereal just yet.”

He did, however, give it a 5 out of 5 for solubility as this powder consistently mixes well. We also gave it a 5 out of 5 for formulation as Legion always lacks proprietary blends and provides comprehensive citations of the science behind each ingredient they include in their products.

A woman smiles while standing behind a bag and shake of Legion Whey Protein Powder.

We gave Legion Whey+ protein a score of 3 out of 5 for cost because it costs $1.99 per serving, which is pretty high by market standards. Though the best clean protein powders do tend to carry this price tag as you usually have to pay for quality, most teens buying their own supplements might have a tough time affording this one on a consistent basis.

Best Protein Powder for Teen Athletes: Onnit Grass-Fed Whey

Good for: Teen athletes who prefer to consume exclusively third-party-tested protein powder

Best for Athletes

Onnit Whey Protein

GGR Score: 4.4 starstarstarstarstar

Product Highlights

 • Sourced from New Zealand grass-fed cows
 • Made with whey protein isolate to filter out fats and carbs
 • Offers a complete amino acid profile
 • Website offers a subscription option to save money and auto-ship

Pros & Cons

Pros

 • Low in carbs
 • High in leucine
 • Whey isolate gets to muscles faster
 • Non-GMO

Cons

 • High cost per serving
 • Can cause digestive issues for some people
 • The Mexican Chocolate flavor has mixed reviews

Bottom Line

Onnit Whey Protein is a great protein option for those looking for a grass-fed protein, however there are cleaner grass-fed protein powders on the market that are lower in cost.

Onnit is an American sports nutrition company based in Austin, Texas, that is proud to provide responsibly-sourced products that are third-party tested. Given they also avoid using artificial ingredients, artificial sweeteners, additives, or fillers. Given these standards, this is why we named it the best protein powder for teen athletes.

Former GGR Senior Staff Writer Amanda Capritto, CSNC, CPT, tried the Mexican Chocolate flavor and had this to say about the taste and texture: “It’s super thin, especially if you blend it with water, but if you use cow’s milk or oat milk it’s actually pretty rich. The Mexican Chocolate has a different flavor than other protein powders that come in chocolate, but it’s a good flavor.”

RELATED: How To Mix Protein Powder Without a Shaker

Based on Amanda’s feedback, we gave it a 3.75-out-of-5 rating for taste. We also gave it a 5 out of 5 for solubility. “This stuff dissolves almost too well, hence the thin texture,” Amanda reports. “But if you’re looking for a protein powder that gives you zero clumps, this fits the bill.”

A person scooping Onnit Grass-Fed Whey Isolate into a shaker cup.

We rated it 4.5 out of 5 for formulation as Onnit’s protein has some novel ingredients you don’t commonly find in other protein powders. We had to knock a bit off because there are only 20 grams of protein per serving and we’d like to see something closer to 25 or 30 grams of protein.

That said, there’s nothing artificial and, in addition to high-quality whey protein isolate, Onnit whey protein also contains digestive enzymes and even probiotics to support smoother digestion.

It’s sweetened with monk fruit extract, a natural, zero-calorie sweetener. So, although it’s not a lactose-free product, the addition of digestive enzymes like lactase may be beneficial for teens who have issues digesting lactose1

Onnit whey protein is third-party tested by Informed Choice, which is excellent for teen athletes, so we awarded it a rating of 5 out of 5 for third-party testing. Last, but not least, Onnit’s Keep-It™ guarantee offers customers 90 days to try the product and if you don’t like it, you can keep it. So, there’s little risk in giving this one a try.

Best Budget Protein Powder for Teens: Nutricost Whey Protein Concentrate

Good for: Teens on a tight budget who need a bare minimum protein powder to meet protein needs

Best Budget

Nutricost Whey Protein Concentrate

GGR Score: 4.6 starstarstarstarstar

Product Highlights

 • 25 grams of whey protein concentrate per serving
 • Available in 5 flavors, including unflavored
 • High-quality ingredients and third-party testing
 • Supports lean muscle growth and recovery after workouts

Pros & Cons

Pros

 • Non-GMO and gluten-free
 • Manufactured in GMP-compliant facility
 • Unflavored option only contains one ingredient, instantized whey protein concentrate

Cons

 • Whey concentrate may not mix as well as whey isolate
 • Flavored options are higher in calories than other whey proteins

Bottom Line

Nutricost Whey Concentrate contains 25 grams of high-quality whey protein concentrate, available in five flavors. It's gluten-free, non-GMO, manufactured in a GMP-compliant facility, and third-party tested.

As a leading supplier of dietary supplements to active individuals, Nutricost stands out in the market as an affordable and accessible option for sports nutrition. However, do you get what you pay for with Nutricost? To answer this, we had Kate Meier, GGR senior director of content, try their Chocolate Peanut Butter whey protein concentrate.

Let’s start with the formulation. We gave it 4 stars out of 5 for the flavored version and 5 out of 5 for the unflavored version. Unfortunately, the flavored versions, including the Chocolate Peanut Butter, contain some no-so-clean stuff like artificial sweeteners.

RELATED: Best Protein Powder Without Artificial Sweeteners

The unflavored version, though, only contains whey protein concentrate as its sole ingredient. So, if you want somewhat of a clean protein powder on a budget, it’s best that you’re OK with one without flavor if you are eyeing Nutricost.

woman mixing Nutricost Whey Concentrate into a shake

Here’s the problem, though, this protein is whey protein concentrate rather than isolate. While whey protein isolate typically contains 95% protein, concentrate can have a protein content as low as 50% to 70%2

Concentrate also doesn’t go through the level of processing isolate does to remove much of the fat, carbohydrates, and lactose, so those with lactose sensitivities tend to have issues digesting whey protein concentrate.

That said, we gave it a 5 out of 5 for taste based on Kate’s experience. “Despite me not necessarily being a fan of peanut butter, I actually really, really liked the peanut flavor from the Chocolate Peanut Butter. It’s not too strong and doesn’t overwhelm the chocolate flavor,” she says.

We gave it a 4 out of 5 for third-party testing as, despite there being some testing, it’s not certified by NSF for Sport or Informed Choice. Finally, with a price per serving of $1.15 if you buy on Amazon, we gave it a score of 5 out of 5 for price since it is one of the most economical options on our list.

Best Vegan Protein Powder for Teens: 1st Phorm Vegan Power Pro

Good for: Vegan athletes who don’t have very high protein needs

Best Vegan

1st Phorm Vegan Power Pro

GGR Score: 4 starstarstarstarstar

Product Highlights

 • Plant-based and soy-free
 • Digestive enzyme blend for easier digestion
 • No artificial sweeteners
 • $1.83 per serving

Pros & Cons

Pros

 • Allergen-friendly
 • Digestive enzymes to help with digestion
 • 6 flavor options
 • No artificial sweeteners

Cons

 • Expensive

Bottom Line

1st Phorm Vegan Power Pro is free from most allergens and comes with a digestive enzyme blend to aid the digestion, decreasing the likelihood of upset stomachs.

1st Phorm Vegan Power Pro contains organic rice and pea protein to provide plant-based protein. The 1st Phorm protein product boasts being vegan-friendly, however it should be noted that the allergen statement on the 1st Phorm website also cautions that the product might have small amounts of milk, egg, soy, and wheat due to these ingredients being processed in the same facility. So, be wary if your teen has allergies.

We had GGR Everything Lead Tester Lindsay Scheele try the Oatmeal Cookie flavor. “It tastes just like an oatmeal cookie and even smells like gingerbread cookies baked fresh on Christmas day,” she says. So, we gave a 4 out of 5 for taste. That said, Lindsay wasn’t too keen on the texture.

“1st Phorm recommends just 6 ounces of liquid for mixing, but I ended up adding 3 more ounces and using water,” Lindsay says. “If you use milk, your protein shakes are going to end up chalky and the consistency gets aggressively thick.” Based on this, despite Lindsay specifying it was easy to mix, we gave it 4.5 out of 5 stars for solubility.

woman pouring 1st Phorm Vegan Power Pro into water

For formulation, we rated it 3.75 out of 5 stars. Let’s start with the ingredients. The main protein sources are pea and rice protein. This is a great combo to have in a plant-based protein powder as it creates a profile of essential amino acids that is very similar to whey3

The plant-based protein also has a superfood blend extracted from over a dozen different fruits and vegetables along with ingredients from whole foods you’d often find in greens powder like wheat grass and even spirulina. However, this is a proprietary blend, so it’s unclear how potent the antioxidants may be.

With all of this said, we knocked some stars off of the formulation rating due to the fact that there are only 19 grams of protein per serving. We’d like to see much more, but at least 20 grams at minimum, especially considering it’s a plant-based protein powder.

RELATED: A Registered Dietitian Breaks Down Pea Protein Benefits

Studies show plant-based protein like pea, rice, and soy protein don’t absorb nearly as well4 as animal-based protein like whey or egg white protein isolate, especially when it comes to muscle growth. So vegan athletes may need higher doses of protein from these types of protein powder.

Best Whey Protein Powder for Teens: Sports Research Whey Isolate

Good for: Those looking for a whey protein that’s natural and not super expensive

Best Whey

Sports Research Whey Isolate

GGR Score: 4.68 starstarstarstarstar

Product Highlights

 • Whey protein isolate
 • 25 g of protein per serving
 • Available in chocolate or vanilla
 • Informed Choice-certified

Pros & Cons

Pros

 • Affordable
 • Third-party tested
 • 25 grams of protein per serving

Cons

 • Only two flavors available
 • Our tester had issues with solubility

Bottom Line

Sports Research whey protein isolate has 25 grams of protein per serving and just 150 calories. It's third-party tested, too. Although there are only two flavors available, our testers think it's worth a try.

At GGR, we’ve tried Sports Research Whey Protein Isolate in the past and it’s definitely well-liked among the team. It’s great for protein shakes and, if you have a teen athlete trying to increase their body weight, this is a great product to have on hand.

When we made our list of Best Protein Powder for Muscle Gain, we named Sports Research Whey Protein the best protein powder for weight gain. The protein powder contains 140 calories per serving with a substantial macronutrient content as it contains more fat and carbohydrates than most other whey protein isolates.

That said, the ingredient list is quite short, with natural flavors, and the powder is non-GMO, gluten-free, and soy-free. Sports Research also lists the full content of the essential amino acids the dietary supplement contains. There are also 25 grams of protein, which we liked, so we rated it a 4.5 out of 5 for formulation.

We had GGR Performance Editor Anthony O’Reilly, CNC, CPT, try the Chocolate flavor. “It tasted like instant hot cocoa, which isn’t a bad thing!” Anthony says. “I wouldn’t mind having this at a bonfire with some marshmallows. It’s also free of that protein aftertaste.” Anthony also reports no unpleasant side effects like bloating or a sour stomach.

RELATED: Protein Bar vs Shake

The rave reviews Anthony gave for taste didn’t transfer to solubility, though, for which we gave it 3.5 out of 5 stars. Anthony comments, “Even if you shake it extra well, there’s still a lot of clumping. What you do manage to get mixed is smooth, though, so at least it was good texture-wise.”

This whey isolate is also third-party tested by Informed Choice, which earns it a 5 out of 5 for third-party testing. Finally, Sports Research Whey Isolate will run you about $1.31 per serving when you get it on Amazon, which is pretty stinking good for a third-party tested whey isolate made with natural ingredients. So we gave it a 5 out of 5 in that category.

How We Picked and Tested the Best Protein Powder for Teens

When making recommendations for protein powder for teens, the team at GGR took extra care to choose responsibly, given that more care should be taken in supplementation regimens for those who are not yet adults. So, below is the criteria we used to make our list:

Taste

First and foremost, for any parents reading, you know that the difficulty in getting kids to consume anything remotely healthy can’t be understated. While this isn’t true for all teens, we’re sure most agree that choosing a supplement that’s great tasting is the best way to help a teen to meet their daily protein needs.

RELATED: Best-Tasting Protein Powder

So, we wanted to pick out protein powders that had a pleasant enough taste that teens would be able to enjoy them consistently if they planned on using protein supplements long term.

Price

Not all teens are getting an allowance to just buy whatever sports nutrition supplements they want. For teens trying to increase protein intake, even protein-rich foods can get expensive, especially if they are high-quality, complete protein sources like seafood and lean beef.

Lindsay Scheele, CPT, drinking XWERKS Grow.

So, given protein powder can be a more economical way to provide the protein the body needs, choosing one that fits easily into a teen’s budget can be very helpful.

Third-Party Testing

Third-party testing is always something that should be a priority if budgets and availability allow. Adulterated supplements that could be contaminated with chemicals not listed on the ingredient label are a real possibility and consumption of these could be disastrous for underage athletes.

This may come as a surprise, but there are some teen athletes who do quietly use banned substances such as anabolic steroids, even if just for aesthetic reasons rather than athletic performance. Unfortunately, studies have shown that exposure to these compounds in minors can result in bodily harm and behavioral issues5, the latter of which we’re sure some parents don’t need more of from their teenager. So, unintentional exposure from a supplement that hasn’t been tested by a third party is something that should be accounted for.

Benefits of Protein Powder for Teens

Does a teen need protein powder to build muscle mass or meet protein requirements? Not really. However, there are some cases where implementing such a supplement into the routine of a young athlete can be beneficial. Here are some of those cases.

Palatable Lean Protein Source

High-quality, complete protein sources like lean beef, poultry, and seafood may be difficult to integrate into the diets of young people who perhaps haven’t developed a palate for those foods yet. Though it’s important to get those building blocks in for growing athletes, sometimes it’s more realistic to meet their protein needs through more creative measures.

That’s where a protein powder can come in. Something like a sweet, creamy, chocolate- or strawberry-flavored drink can be much more approachable for youth athletes, especially for consistent consumption.

Great Source of Calcium and Vitamin D

The reason children receive their government-mandated milk as the standard beverage in schools is that public health officials are aware of how very important calcium intake is for young people. Given that whey protein powder is made from this same cow’s milk, it’s also an excellent source of calcium that can contribute to a teen’s daily needs.

3 kids sit at a table drinking Grow Daily shakes

Not only is calcium vital for the still-growing bones of a teenager, these supplements may also contain vitamin D. While many people know that vitamin D’s main function is to assist with calcium absorption, research is also beginning to show that getting enough vitamin D can help boost athletic performance6

RELATED: Best Vitamin D Supplement

Healthy Weight Gain

Some teens have a large amount of trouble getting enough calories or supporting proper protein intake to account for both their level of physical activity and the energy consumption that is required to support the rapid growth that is occuring in their body.

Many teens are exposed to plenty of misinformation, particularly on social media, when it comes to the proper way to increase body weight or build muscle. Many mistakenly believe that eating highly caloric foods, even the junky ones, is the way to go.

However, steering these teens to a high-quality protein powder to boost intake instead is undoubtedly the better way to get them what their body needs.

Dosing and Interactions

Given that most protein powders are sourced from whole foods, they are likely safe for most teens when taken as directed. However, if one consumes excess protein powder, they are more likely to experience whey protein side effects, with the most common being bloating, headaches, changes in bowel movements, and even acne (as if teens need more of that going on).

Protein powder, however, can be a great source of calcium and complete protein as long as there are no sensitivities to lactose or allergies to dairy. It’s a good idea to talk to your healthcare provider or pediatrician about potential interactions or side effects if your teen is taking prescription medications.

One other interaction to be aware of is the combination of whey and iron. It’s imperative that teens get enough iron in their diets as their rapid growth and development also comes with an increase in blood volume7, which is doubly important if the teen has a high activity level and needs more oxygen availability to boot.

legion whey protein pour

While plenty of iron can be obtained from food sources if the teen eats enough animal protein, it should be known that calcium, like that contained in a whey protein powder, inhibits the absorption of iron8

So, it’s a good idea to time that daily protein shake strategically around meals, rather than during them to limit the potential for this interaction.

RELATED: Best Iron Supplement

All of this said, it must be stressed that any pediatric nutritionist will say it’s best that teens try to get enough protein from protein-rich foods included in a balanced diet first before turning to supplements. So, it’s not recommended to use protein powder as a meal replacement for teens as you don’t want too much protein powder displacing nutritious foods in the diet.

As mentioned, teenagers are still growing and need to make sure they are getting a wide range of nutrients, not just enough protein, to support a healthy immune system and thrive properly.

Third-Party Testing

Given that protein supplements along with other dietary supplements are not regulated by the FDA, you always want to be vigilant with the brands you choose, especially if they are going to be provided to someone like a teen who is still growing and developing.

Looking for products that are third-party tested provides a level of assurance and safety that the protein supplements you are taking are as potent as it mentions on the label, contains the amount of protein it claims to, and is free from dangerous contaminants like heavy metals.

The heavy metals piece isn’t just a scare tactic, by the way, as it is commonly found in tested protein supplements. Among 13 protein powders tested in 2020, 40% contained heavy metals such as arsenic, mercury, and lead, according to one analysis9.

Woman drinking an Evolve plant-based protein shake

This is of particular concern for teens as their brains have not fully developed and many studies have shown that exposure to heavy metals, especially arsenic, mercury, and lead, in those under the age of 18 can have detrimental effects on neurodevelopment and IQ scores10

RELATED: Best Clean Protein Powder

It is also reassuring to know that protein powder brands claiming third-party verification have been cleared of being contaminated with heavy metals, banned substances, and other harmful ingredients.

In reality, even though third-party testing isn’t a requirement for those who just want to find a high-quality protein supplement, and teens aren’t likely to have to worry about drug testing, it is always a good idea to choose a product that has been tested before purchase to ensure that it is safe.

Buying Guide: What to Look for in Protein Powder for Teens

Cutting through misinformation and flashy labeling can be challenging when shopping for a protein powder for teenagers. However, we do have some things you can keep in mind to help:

Clean Ingredients

In a growing child, it should be a concern to ensure they avoid potentially artificial ingredients or fillers that simply don’t serve their nutritional wellness. So, look for protein powder that has a short ingredient list.

Sugar Content

It’s not unreasonable to assume that teens are getting plenty of sugar from their regular diet. So, it wouldn’t serve them well to provide even more sugar from a supplement that’s supposed to help support their wellness.

So, try to avoid protein powder that has too much added sugar. According to the FDA, a product is high in added sugar if it contains 20% or more of the daily value11. Look for this on the nutrition facts label and try to ensure the number is as low as possible.

Benefits of Protein Powders for Diabetics Protein powders …]]> Diabetes1 is a complex metabolic disorder characterized by elevated blood sugar (glucose) levels due to secretion and action issues with insulin or the hormone that helps blood sugar enter the body’s cells for energy. There are various types of diabetes, but the primary ones are types 1 and 2.

I’ll focus on Type 2 diabetes, which is more prevalent and largely preventable, unlike Type 1 diabetes. Although dietary advice for individuals with diabetes2 should be individualized, protein is integral for blood sugar and weight management.

So, enter the best protein powders for diabetics, offering numerous benefits I’ll discuss in full below. Although protein powders should only supplement an already balanced diet, they can be as convenient and trustworthy as the best diabetic meal delivery services.

 • Third-party testing: Can we trust the label’s accuracy and product purity?
 • Taste: Is it enjoyable with flavor options to choose from?

Bottom Line

Our testers love Transparent Labs 100% Grass-Fed Whey Protein Isolate because we know exactly what's in it, and almost every flavor we've tried is a 5 out of 5 on taste. Yes, it's a little more expensive than other protein powders but you get what you pay for.

As a low-sugar, high-protein option with 5-star ratings across the board, Transparent Labs 100% Grass-Fed Whey Isolate stands out as the best protein powder for diabetics. While you can find more detailed information in our Transparent Labs Protein review, let’s highlight the key benefits of this high-quality protein powder for individuals managing blood sugar levels and other dairy drinkers.

The most notable ingredient is its grass-fed whey protein isolate, delivering 28 grams of pure protein per scoop, complete with all the essential amino acids needed from dietary sources. A 2023 review3 suggests that high-quality whey may help manage type 2 diabetes by controlling postprandial hyperglycemia (post-meal blood glucose levels) and improving insulin sensitivity, how well cells respond to insulin. Whey protein may also help prevent cardiovascular disease, a major risk of diabetes, by improving blood lipid (fat) levels, including cholesterol.

A person holds a container of Transparent Labs 100% Grass-Fed Whey Protein Isolate.

Whey protein isolates are filtered to contain more protein and fewer carbs, fats, and lactose than concentrates, making them an excellent choice for people with diabetes who are lactose intolerant or have dairy sensitivities. Transparent Labs’ product is free from added sugars, artificial sweeteners, coloring, and preservatives and includes natural ingredients like cocoa powder, stevia, and peanut flour, depending on the flavor.

GGR Performance Editor Anthony O’Reilly, a certified personal trainer and nutrition coach, sampled the Peppermint Hot Chocolate flavor and praised its authentic taste. Though he wished for whipped cream and marshmallows, he found it delightful, awarding it a flawless 5-star rating for flavor. We also appreciate the absence of added sugars and fats to maintain blood sugar balance.

Transparent Labs’ Whey Isolate is Informed-Choice and Informed-Protein certified, meaning it undergoes rigorous third-party testing to ensure the label matches the contents and is free from banned substances—a critical factor for athletes. You can even view its Certificates of Analysis and Composition, underscoring its perfect 5-star rating in this category.

Best-Tasting Protein Powder for Diabetics: XWERKS Grow

Good for: Increasing daily protein intake while balancing blood sugars and savoring classic, satisfying flavors

Best-Tasting

XWERKS Grow

GGR Score: 4.25 starstarstarstarstar

Product Highlights

 • Natural, healthy, convenient, and tasty way to get protein
 • Uses a microfiltration process to preserve critical biological nutrients in raw whey
 • Removes unwanted fats and carbohydrates
 • All flavors are naturally sweetened
 • Nicely flavored, easily digested, and low-carb protein powder
 • Promotes muscle growth and repair

Pros & Cons

Pros

 • Keto-friendly
 • Naturally sweetened
 • Sourced from naturally raised grass-fed cows
 • Has a smooth and creamy taste
 • Soy- and gluten-free
 • Convenient

Cons

 • Expensive

Bottom Line

XWERKS Grow whey protein isolate provides a solid blend of amino acids, vitamins, and minerals in a whey protein isolate. Our testers have said this is one of the best-tasting protein powders they've tried, and they've had more than 100.

The quality and taste of a protein powder are equally important, and XWERKS Grow Whey Protein delivers on both fronts. This is especially noteworthy for individuals with type 2 diabetes, who often experience food cravings4: protein helps curb these cravings and enhances satiety, aiding in balanced blood sugar levels—a win-win situation, but we’re just getting started.

XWERKS Grow offers four classic flavors—Chocolate, Peanut Butter, Strawberry, and Vanilla. While the selection might seem limited, quality over quantity rings true: All flavors are naturally sweetened and flavored with ingredients like cocoa and vanilla beans. However, they contain xanthan gum, which might cause digestive issues for some consumers.

Lindsay Scheele, CPT, drinking XWERKS Grow.

Our expert product tester, Anthony, sampled the Chocolate flavor and was thoroughly impressed. “Remember those nostalgic Yoo-hoos? Yeah, it’s like protein-chocolaty goodness!” He notes that XWERKS Grow stands out with its delectably smooth texture among the many protein powders he’s tried. So, it’s no surprise that XWERKS also earns perfect 5s for both taste and solubility.

RELATED: Best-Tasting Protein Powder

The accolades don’t stop there. XWERKS Grow also scores a perfect rating for its formulation. This grass-fed whey protein isolate provides 25 grams of protein per scoop and over 6 grams of branched-chain amino acids (BCAAs). While BCAAs are primarily known for promoting muscle growth, they can also help improve postprandial hyperglycemia3.

Despite the rave reviews, one downside is that XWERKS Grow is not third-party tested. While we don’t necessarily consider XWERKS lesser because of this, we prioritize third-party-tested products, especially for athletes subject to drug testing.

Best Vegan

Ritual Essential Protein Daily Shake 18+

GGR Score: 4.13 starstarstarstarstar

Product Highlights

 • Organic pea protein powder
 • 20 g of protein per serving
 • Formulated to support adults 18-49
 • Third-party tested
 • 150 mg of choline per serving

Pros & Cons

Pros

 • Soy-free, gluten-free, and vegan-friendly
 • No artificial sweeteners
 • Complete amino acid profile
 • Non-GMO
 • USA-grown peas

Cons

 • Only comes in one flavor
 • Price per serving is on the high end

Bottom Line

Ritual’s Essential Protein Daily Shake 18+ is specifically designed for 18-to-49 year-olds with 20 grams of protein per serving and 150 milligrams of chlorine (to support brain and nervous system function). This protein powder from Ritual is third-party tested and Informed Sport Certified, which means this formula has been screened for over 250 banned substances.

High-quality proteins aren’t just about whey; Ritual’s vegan blend is a prime example. While many plant-based, high-protein foods are rich in carbs, Ritual Essential Daily Shake 18+ stands out as a lean protein source—let’s dive into the details.

Each serving packs a punch with 20 grams of organic pea protein and 400 milligrams of L-methionine, an essential amino acid often missing in pea protein5. This clever addition ensures you get a complete protein, and Ritual goes a step further by including choline6 to boost methionine levels even more.

Unlike dairy proteins, which often lack fiber, this pea protein powder provides 3 grams of dietary fiber to support blood sugar balance, heart health, and digestion. Using non-nutritive sweeteners, including monk fruit, enhances its palatability without affecting blood sugar levels.

RELATED: Plant-Based Protein Powder vs Whey

Regarding taste, GGR Senior Director of Content Kate Meier, a certified personal trainer, USA Weightlifting L-1 coach, and Crossfit L-1 coach shares her experience: “I tried Ritual in a couple of ways: first by blending it with water and then mixing it into a berry smoothie. When mixed with water, there’s a slightly chalky aftertaste, but the overall flavor is surprisingly pleasant and not overly hempy or plant-like, unlike other plant-based proteins I’ve encountered. In a smoothie with blueberries and strawberries, the taste is present but not overpowering. Overall, I’m impressed with its flavor.” While vegan proteins might not suit everyone, Ritual earns a solid 4 out of 5 for taste and solubility.

Ritual also gets 5 stars for being third-party tested by Informed-Sport, ensuring that what you see is what you get and that athletes can be confident it’s free from banned substances. We appreciate its transparency, as it displays the origin of each ingredient.

Bottom Line

Legion Whey+ is a clean, sustainable protein powder that also is macro-friendly and a great option for anyone looking for a clean protein supplement. Many of our testers have brought this with their own money because they love the taste and easy mixability.

In most ways, Legion Whey+ is the epitome of natural purity in protein supplements. While our comprehensive Legion Whey Protein review delves into all its glory, let’s highlight its standout qualities.

First, each scoop of Legion Whey+ delivers over 20 grams of whey protein isolate, free from “artificial junk” (Legion’s words, not mine). Legion swaps artificial flavors, sweeteners, preservatives, and fillers with natural flavors, Stevia leaf extract, sea salt, and a perfect 5 formulation score.

Legion Whey+ also boasts impressive certifications, earning a perfect 5 for third-party testing. It holds a Labdoor Tested for Purity certification, ensuring rigorous testing for harmful and banned substances. You’ll also notice its Truly Grass-Fed certification, guaranteeing that the cows producing the dairy for the whey protein isolate are exclusively grass-fed (no corn or soy added) and spend most of their time grazing in Ireland’s pastures.

While the nutritional benefits of grass-fed whey may not significantly surpass those of grain-fed whey, the taste certainly does, based on anecdotal evidence from GGR’s expert testers. Anthony sampled the Cinnamon Cereal flavor, returning him to a childhood favorite, Cinnamon Toast Crunch. “While that cinnamon spice didn’t quite hit as nice as that last bit of CTC at the bottom of the bowl, the flavor is definitely noticeable,” he says, ultimately rating Legion Whey+ a 4.5 out of 5 for taste and a perfect 5 for solubility.

If cinnamon isn’t your bowl of cereal, Legion Whey+ offers 15 more low-sugar flavors, ranging from Banana Bread to Cookies & Cream to Salted Caramel. Increase your protein intake and balance your blood sugar with a sippable Salted Caramel? We’re in!

Best Budget Protein Powder for Diabetics: Nutricost Whey Protein Concentrate

Good for: Anyone looking for a low-carb, high-protein option without breaking the bank

Best Budget

Nutricost Whey Protein Concentrate

GGR Score: 4.6 starstarstarstarstar

Product Highlights

 • 25 grams of whey protein concentrate per serving
 • Available in 5 flavors, including unflavored
 • High-quality ingredients and third-party testing
 • Supports lean muscle growth and recovery after workouts

Pros & Cons

Pros

 • Non-GMO and gluten-free
 • Manufactured in GMP-compliant facility
 • Unflavored option only contains one ingredient, instantized whey protein concentrate

Cons

 • Whey concentrate may not mix as well as whey isolate
 • Flavored options are higher in calories than other whey proteins

Bottom Line

Nutricost Whey Concentrate contains 25 grams of high-quality whey protein concentrate, available in five flavors. It's gluten-free, non-GMO, manufactured in a GMP-compliant facility, and third-party tested.

If you’re looking for a low-sugar, budget-friendly protein option that won’t break the bank or cause blood sugar spikes, Nutricost Whey Protein Concentrate might suit you. Its price starts at $0.74 per serving on Amazon, earning a perfect 5 for price without compromising value.

The Unflavored Nutricost Whey Protein Concentrate is as simple as it gets, containing only two ingredients: 25 grams of whey protein concentrate per serving and sunflower lecithin (an emulsifier that helps stabilize mixtures). While whey protein concentrate isn’t as lean as protein isolates, it’s still rich in essential amino acids (EAAs) and branched-chain amino acids (BCAAs). Depending on the flavor, Nutricost Whey Protein Concentrate contains a maximum of three grams of carbs and fat.

Pouring Nutricost Whey Concentrate into a cup

However, there is a trade-off to consider. The Unflavored option earns a perfect 5-star rating, but we deducted flavored options to 4 out of 5 due to the inclusion of the artificial sweetener sucralose. The chocolate flavor also contains acesulfame potassium. While these sweeteners are generally safe for diabetics, they may cause digestive upset in some consumers.

If you’re tolerant of artificial sweeteners, you might agree that the flavored options deserve a perfect 5-star rating for taste. Kate reluctantly tried the Chocolate Peanut Butter flavor as a non-peanut butter lover. She was pleasantly surprised, telling us, “I didn’t expect to truly enjoy this! The peanut butter comes through in all the right ways, allowing the chocolate to still make a delicious appearance.”

As for third-party testing, Nutricost Whey Protein Concentrate receives a 4 out of 5 rating. Although it undergoes independent testing for purity and safety, Nutricost isn’t transparent about which lab conducts the tests.

Best Organic

Orgain Organic Protein Powder

GGR Score: 3.75 starstarstarstarstar

Product Highlights

 • Multi-source vegan protein powder
 • USDA organic, non-GMO, dairy-free, kosher, and no artificial ingredients
 • 21 grams of protein per serving

Pros & Cons

Pros

 • Wide variety of flavors, including seasonal options
 • Under $2 per serving
 • Coffee flavor with caffeine

Cons

 • Only 21 grams of protein per serving
 • Some reviewers found flavors too sweet
 • Reviewers reported upset stomach

Bottom Line

Orgain protein doesn’t have as much protein per serving as its competitors, but it has the widest variety of flavors. Some users did experience upset stomachs after using the protein.

“Organic” describes the method of processing ingredients, and for Orgain’s Certified USDA Organic protein powder, its produce is grown without prohibited substances, such as synthetic fertilizers and pesticides. A 2020 systematic review7 suggests that increasing organic food intake can lead to positive health outcomes, including reduced incidences of metabolic syndrome and type 2 diabetes8.

Let’s not forget protein’s crucial role in managing blood sugar levels. Orgain Organic Protein Powder offers 21 grams of protein per serving, sourced from organic pea, chia seed, and brown rice proteins. While it may contain up to 16 grams of carbs and fat per serving, which is higher than some other proteins, it’s a solid option as a mini meal replacement. Additionally, it includes prebiotics and dietary fiber to support digestion, blood sugar management, and heart health.

Orgain Organic Protein 1

However, the powder also includes gums and erythritol, which may cause digestive distress in some individuals. For instance, Anthony experienced gassiness, leading to a 4 out of 5 rating for side effects and formulation.

Anthony tried the Vanilla Bean flavor and found it true to taste, though not exceptional, and noticed some floaties, which are relatively common with plant-based protein powders. These qualities resulted in a 3.5 out of 5 rating for taste and a 4 for solubility.

Our Orgain Protein Powder Review highlights that while some customers may desire more flavor intensity, it boasts a 4.5 out of 5 rating on Amazon. Orgain’s fans praise its taste, ease of use, and high-quality ingredients.

 • 110 calories per serving
 • Under 1g of fat per scoop

Pros & Cons

Pros

A protein powder that comes very close to being pure protein, at a reasonable price.

Craving various sweet treats but need to balance your blood sugar levels? Jacked Factory Authentic ISO offers a range of flavors—from Blueberry Muffin to Cinnamon French Toast to Cookies and Cream—while being a low-carb and low-sugar option. Let’s bite into this whey protein isolate’s sweet details.

Let’s do a comparison for funsies: A 31-gram blueberry muffin contains around 500 calories, 16 grams of carbs, 10 grams of sugar, 5 grams of fat, and 1 gram of protein. On the other hand, a 30.4-gram scoop of Jacked Factory’s Blueberry Muffin flavor delivers only 110 calories, 0.5 grams of fat, 1 gram of carb, and a whopping 25 grams of protein—that’s 25 times more protein than the muffin! While indulging in a blueberry muffin is perfectly fine (unless medically-advised otherwise), enjoying it in moderation is essential to maintain balanced blood sugar levels and overall health.

A close up of a person holding out a scoop of Jacked Factory Authentic Iso Whey Protein.

Anthony tried the Vanilla flavor and rated it 4 out of 5, noting its slightly oversweet flavor and good solubility. He couldn’t detect the stevia extract among its tidy ingredients list, but the artificial sweetener sucralose likely contributed to the intense sweetness he experienced.

Additionally, Jacked Factory offers “Post” in Oatmeal Chocolate Chip and Vanilla, among other ISO flavors. Alongside 25 grams of protein, these options include 3,000 milligrams of creatine monohydrate and 2,500 milligrams of betaine anhydrous for post-workout recovery. While it may be a solid option for some, others may solely want the flavor variety and protein that comes with it.

Although Jacked Factory’s whey protein isolate is not third-party tested, it is manufactured in the U.S. in a cGMP (Current Good Manufacturing Practice) and FDA-registered facility, ensuring a high-quality standard. Other Protein Powders for Diabetics We Researched

To keep our recommendations concise, we narrowed down our top picks for people with diabetes. However, several others we think fit the bill, including many of the best sugar-free protein powders

 • Kaged Whey Protein Isolate: This low-calorie whey protein isolate includes digestive enzymes to aid protein absorption and contains no artificial sweeteners.
 • Dymatize ISO-100: A sugar-free, easy-to-digest hydrolyzed whey protein available in notoriously sweet flavors like Fruity Pebbles, Cocoa Puffs, and Dunkin’ Glazed Donut.
 • Transparent Labs Casein: A dairy-based casein protein that may help prolong satiety and stabilize blood sugar levels, but its thick texture may not suit everyone.
 • Garden of Life Sport: This third-party tested and certified organic vegan powder provides 30 grams of lean protein and 5.5 grams of BCAAs, but other plant-based options deliver a more enjoyable taste.

How We Picked the Best Protein Powders for Diabetics

Choosing the best protein powders for diabetics requires a comprehensive approach, and we lean on our trusty GGR supplement testing methodology to make our selections. Here’s how we picked our top picks:

Protein Content and Source

The primary ingredient in any protein powder should be, unsurprisingly, protein. We aim for a minimum of 20 grams per serving, ensuring you get a substantial amount with each use. We also incorporated a variety of protein sources, such as plant-based and whey protein powders, to accommodate diverse dietary restrictions and preferences.

Sugar Content

Protein powders can have varying sugar levels, with dairy-based options typically having less and plant-based powders often having more. Our selection prioritizes products with minimal added sugars, making them safe and effective for managing blood sugar levels.

Flavor

While formulation is essential, it doesn’t mean much if it isn’t palatable and enjoyable. Our top picks feature a range of flavors to cater to different preferences, from classic Chocolate to nostalgic Cinnamon Toast Crunch.

A woman is shown drinking from a shaker cup.

Solubility

Solubility, or how well a protein powder mixes with liquid, is essential for a smooth, enjoyable protein shake. We prioritize products that dissolve effortlessly, ensuring a smooth texture without lengthy mixing—perfect for on-the-go convenience when you don’t have a blender handy.

Cost

Cost shouldn’t be a barrier to increasing daily protein intake. That’s why we offer a variety of products that cater to different budgets, ensuring you can meet your protein needs without compromising quality or value.

Customer Reviews and Experience

While the GGR team rigorously tests and reviews every product we recommend, we also consider customer feedback. We analyze reviews from third-party sites like Amazon to maintain objectivity and reduce potential biases from brand sites.

Benefits of Protein Powders for Diabetics

Protein powders offer numerous benefits for diabetics, ranging from blood sugar management to delightful versatility. Here are the key advantages:

 • Blood sugar management: Protein has minimal impact on blood sugar responses2, making it a reliable option for those monitoring their glucose.
 • Convenience: High-protein foods should form the core of your diet, but protein powders offer unmatched convenience to meet daily protein needs.
 • Versatility: Protein powder isn’t just for protein drinks; you can mix it into oats, bake it into muffins, or blend it into smoothies. Its versatility allows you to get creative with your recipes.
 • Portion control: Even if you don’t measure the exact serving size, using a level scoop of protein powder will keep you close to the recommended portion, helping you manage your intake effectively.
 • Muscle growth: Protein helps build muscle mass when coupled with resistance training9, and less muscle mass is associated with greater insulin resistance and type 2 diabetes risk10
 • Weight loss: High-protein diets promote feelings of fullness, reducing the likelihood of overeating and aiding weight loss. Evidence11 shows even losing a modest five percent of body weight can improve insulin sensitivity.

Dosing and Interactions

The amount of protein individuals with diabetes need varies based on many factors, such as weight loss goals and kidney health. Here are some evidence-based guidelines12:

 • Individuals with diabetes without comorbidities: Aim for at least 1 gram of protein per kilogram (g/kg) of body weight.
 • People with diabetes and chronic kidney disease (CKD): Target 0.8 to 1 g/kg of body weight
 • Individuals with diabetes and normal kidney function pursuing weight loss: Aim for 1.5 to 2 g/kg of body weight.

Also, ensure protein powders do not negatively interact with other supplements or medications. Healthcare professionals, such as doctors and registered dietitians, can help you make informed decisions and provide personalized recommendations based on your health status and goals.

Third-Party Testing

Since dietary supplements, including protein powders, aren’t strictly regulated by the FDA, we prioritize products that have undergone third-party testing or provide transparent labeling with precise ingredient amounts. This ensures the product matches its label and is free from harmful substances.

What To Look For in Protein Powders for Diabetics

When choosing the best protein powder for diabetes, consider several factors to ensure it aligns with your health goals and dietary restrictions. Here’s a quick tip guide to help you make an informed decision that supports your nutritional needs and fits seamlessly into your lifestyle.

Formulation

The formulation of protein powders can vary significantly, so keep these important factors to keep in mind:

 • Carbohydrate and sugar content: Protein powders with low carbohydrate and sugar content are best for maintaining stable blood sugar levels.
 • Dietary allergens and intolerances: Whey isolates may work for you with lactose intolerance. However, plant-based protein powders are the safest choice if you have severe dairy intolerance or allergies. Always check ingredient labels meticulously to avoid common allergens like soy, peanuts, and tree nuts.
 • Sodium content: Pay attention to the sodium content, especially if you need to monitor your levels due to heart or kidney conditions.

Flavor

The flavor is vital in ensuring you use your protein powder consistently, so choose a flavor you enjoy and suits your intended use. For regular consumption from a shaker bottle, go for flavors with high solubility and appeal to you. Traditional flavors, like vanilla, and unflavored options might be the best choice if you mix the powder into smoothies, oatmeal, or other recipes.

Third-Party Testing and Certifications

Look for protein powders that are third-party tested and have certifications relevant to your dietary needs. Certifications provide an extra layer of assurance about the product’s quality and safety. For instance, if you have celiac disease, ensure the product is certified gluten-free.

Should diabetics take protein powder?

Most people, including people with diabetes, don’t need to take protein powder if they already get enough protein from their food. However, protein powder can be a convenient and versatile way to supplement your diet, helping you meet your daily protein requirements more easily.

Which protein does not spike insulin?

Low-carb, lean options—like meats and seafood—are ideal when choosing sources of protein that don’t significantly spike insulin. Dairy and plant-based proteins may cause a slight, manageable blood sugar response if consumed in moderation and without added sugars.

What protein lowers blood sugar?

While protein itself doesn’t directly lower blood sugar levels, it plays a crucial role in managing them. This essential macronutrient helps slow the glycemic response, especially when consuming carbohydrates, which can prevent rapid spikes in blood sugar.2 Opting for lean protein sources—such as animal meats, eggs, and fish—ensures minimal impact on blood sugar levels.

Best Pre-Workout Gummies (2024): Chew, Don’t Chug, for Your Energy Boost https://www.garagegymreviews.com/best-pre-workout-gummies https://www.garagegymreviews.com/best-pre-workout-gummies#respond Mon, 24 Jun 2024 03:33:13 +0000 https://www.garagegymreviews.com/?p=192445 feedback. “To be blunt, it’s just not good,” Stephen continues. “It tastes really artificial and I’m not on my own in this; a lot of customer …]]> Even if you weren’t looking for the best pre-workout gummies out there, you’re still in the right place. We had our team set out and explore the relatively new market of these novel supplements and order some to try. We do have to say up front, though, that we weren’t super blown away by the results of our search in terms of effectiveness.

And it makes sense. When you take a supplement as a powder, companies have a ton of wiggle room in terms of the amount of ingredients they can include along with the doses of these ingredients. If they want to add more ingredients in a certain formulation, they simply make a bigger scoop.

RELATED: Best Pre-Workout

With supplements like gummies and capsules which only take up a finite amount of space for ease of consumption, you don’t have this wiggle room. So, if you’re looking for the same sledgehammer-type impact you get from a high-stim pre-workout powder in a gummy, then you’ll more than likely end up disappointed. Furthermore, if you’re just looking for a bit of pre-workout fuel for your cardio, we would suggest going to find a healthier carb source.

However, if you want to try something new with your pre-workout routine, there are definitely some options in the gummy department. What you choose to go with, though, depends on your dietary preferences, budget, and specific goals. With that in mind, keep reading to see what we found.

 • 5 grams of active ingredients per gummy
 • Listed benefits: increased energy, focus, vascularity, and performance

Pros & Cons

Pros

 • Made in the United States
 • Veteran-owned company

Cons

 • No third-party testing
 • Lower dosages of pre-workout ingredients than powdered form
 • Very limited reviews
 • Your preferred flavor may be sold out
 • Limited in store availability

Bottom Line

Kodagenix created one of the first pre-workout gummy supplements. If you’re used to traditional powdered pre-workout supplements, this gummy may not be for you. The ingredients are in much lower doses. However, if you don’t like chugging down a big drink before your workout, these gummies may be a solid option.

With the slogan “Quality, Convenience, and Gains,” Kodagenix is a sports nutrition supplement company that asserts its goal is to simply provide consistent supplementation with convenient products that are research-based.

They also have what they say is The World’s First Pre Workout Gummy!™ which we’ll get to in a minute. Kodagenix also sells the powder version of pre-workout, creatine, and even pump gummies.

RELATED: Best Pump Pre-Workout

We had Kodagenix’s pre-workout gummies tested by GGR Senior Staff Writer and Olympian Caine Wilkes who tried the Peach Mango flavor. When we asked him about taste he had this to say, “The flavor tastes good enough, but it’s so SOUR!”

He likens the sour gummy to a Warhead, saying, “The citric acid was definitely present. Also, it totally tastes like a full scoop of pre-workout was blended with some gelatin and compressed in a single bite.” That said, we still awarded a 5 out of 5 for taste.

A hand holds up a Kodagenix Pre-Workout Gummy.

We gave it a 4 out of 5 for formulation as this gummy contains many of the common ingredients you would find in your traditional pre-workout powder such as taurine, which could be a game changer for those who prefer supplements in gummy form. We also think this is the only gummy on the list that contains both beta-alanine and citrulline.

The only problem is that these ingredients are pretty underdosed compared to conventional pre-workout formulas with only 800 milligrams of beta-alanine and 1,575 milligrams of l-citrulline, the latter of which is a nitric oxide booster. The clinically effective dose of l-citrulline is 3 to 5 grams1 in order to reap the benefits of increased blood flow, and Kodagenix gummies only have half of the minimum dose.

As far as price, we gave it a 3 out of 5 at $1.50 per serving. Not a bad price, but a bit on the high side when compared to other pre-workouts, especially when you consider the formulation could be more potent.

Best-Tasting Pre-Workout Gummy: Olly Pre-Game Energize

Best-Tasting

Olly Pre-Game Energize Gummy Rings

GGR Score: 3.75 starstarstarstarstar

Product Highlights

 • Energy gummy rings
 • Listed benefits: increased energy and endurance
 • Gluten-free
 • Includes S7 plant-based blend to serve as a nitric oxide booster
 • Blackberry Lime-flavored

Pros & Cons

Pros

 • Third-party tested and NSF-Certified
 • No synthetic flavors or colors
 • Affordable at under $1 per serving
 • Very positive reviews on taste
 • In gummy form so no need to deal with powders and shaker bottles

Cons

 • Lacks multiple traditional pre-workout ingredients
 • Very mixed customer reviews on effectiveness
 • Only available in 1 flavor
 • Processed in a facility with products that may contains soy, egg, peanuts, tree nuts, milk, fish, shellfish, wheat, and sesame

Bottom Line

Olly Pre-Game Energize Gummy Rings are designed to offer an energy boost before a workout. These are called a pre-game supplement rather than a pre-workout, as it lacks multiple traditional pre-workout ingredients such as citrulline, beta-alanine, and betaine. There were very mixed customer reviews on the effectiveness of these gummies. Customers with a history of traditional pre-workout usage typically found it ineffective.

With a gummy for nearly everything from focus to sleep to even sex drive, Olly is one of the biggest names in the gummy wellness world. The particular type we had GGR Senior Staff Writer Caine Wilkes, OLY, USAW-L1, try were the Pre-Game Energize Gummy Rings, which is Olly’s version of a pre-workout gummy.

To start with the price, we gave it a 5 out of 5, since 80 cents per serving is pretty doable for most budgets, so thumbs up there. Now that said, you get what you pay for with Olly Pre-Game Energize as the formulation…well, it isn’t very good at all.

We gave it a 1 out of 5 for formulation as there isn’t a lot going on with the ingredients to the point that it can hardly be called a pre-workout supplement at all. They’re more like energy gummies and that’s still being generous.

There are some B vitamins and a proprietary blend of extracts like turmeric and green tea, but that’s about it. Even that proprietary blend only totals up to about 50 total milligrams of compounds.

The first ingredient is corn syrup, followed by sugar, which results in each gummy containing 3 grams of added sugars. Sure, the inclusion of some vitamins are great, but not what we’re looking for in a pre-workout when you can just eat some pre-workout food

The good news is that Caine loved the taste, so we gave it a 5 out of 5 for that category. “Less of a lime flavor and more of a berry, but the sweetness is pleasant. I would have definitely assumed they were just like gummy bears in the candy aisle if you didn’t tell me they were pre-workout gummies.”

When asked about his general experience with these gummies, Caine reported, “To be fair, these aren’t designed to boost energy levels the way a high-stim pre-workout would, but I didn’t feel a lot from them.”

Best Budget Pre-Workout Gummy: Bounce Nutrition Pre-Workout Gummies

Good for: Vegan athletes looking for a more palatable way to take pre-workout

Best Budget

Bounce Nutrition Pre-Workout Gummies

GGR Score: 3.3 starstarstarstarstar

Product Highlights

 • Vegan pre-workout gummies
 • Listed benefits: improved focus, energy, and strength
 • Available in three flavors: Fruit Punch, Blueberry Pie, and Black Razz

Pros & Cons

Pros

 • Made in the United States in a GMP-compliant facility
 • Vegan and gluten-free
 • Manufactured in an allergy-free facility
 • 60-day money-back guarantee
 • In gummy form so no need to deal with powders and shaker bottles

Cons

 • Limited customer reviews
 • Mixed reviews on taste—multiple reviews mentioned poor aftertaste
 • Only available in 3 flavors
 • Different flavors have different ingredients
 • Lower dosages of ingredients than traditional powdered pre-workout

Bottom Line

Take one to three Bounce Nutrition Pre-workout gummies 15 to 30 minutes before your workout. Bounce states these gummies will help improve focus, energy, and strength. There are limited reviews but customers generally found them effective but complained of an aftertaste.

Bounce as a company began when four friends bonded over their awful experiences with pre-workout powder, stating that dry scooping sucked and they weren’t fans of the short term effects. So, they spent two years formulating pre-workout gummies and have since made over 100 batches of non-GMO and gluten-free gummies made in the USA.

Bounce offers three different varieties of vegan pre-workout gummies: Beast Mode, Shred, and Mushroom+ with Beast Mode being the strongest in their lineup, according to Bounce. So, naturally, that’s the one we ordered and tried. Stephen Sheehan, GGR staff writer and CPT, was a willing candidate and went with the Fruit Punch flavor.

“I got an energy boost from this that was decent,” Stephen says. “But I didn’t get anywhere close to the benefits I’m used to getting from my normal pre-workout supplement.” As far as taste, we rated it a 2 out of 5 based on Stephen’s feedback. “To be blunt, it’s just not good,” Stephen continues. “It tastes really artificial and I’m not on my own in this; a lot of customer reviews have the same complaint.”

They are decent on price, though, at $1.33 per serving. Not the cheapest in the world, but it is an OK formulation for a pre-workout gummy, so we awarded it a 4 out of 5 rating for price. Speaking of formulation, we did give a 2 out of 5 rating in that category.

A container of Bounce Pre-Workout Gummies

The active ingredients in Bounce Beast Mode gummies are as follows:

 • Caffeine (200 mg): We know this one is included to give an energy boost for athletic performance. And the potency equals that of about a 16-ounce coffee, which is pretty good for a gummy. Just be wary if you get jitters easily from caffeine.
 • L-Carnitine (14 mg): Unless you’re an older adult or a vegan, you are likely getting plenty of carnitine. However, for those who are deficient, it can help with reducing muscle soreness after intense exercise2. However, studies done only provide this effect at 500 mg to 2 g per day and Bounce gummies don’t even come close to providing that.
 • L-Theanine (66 mg): Studies have shown that, when combined with caffeine, l-theanine can help boost mental performance3. However, you would need to get about 100 to 200 mg daily to achieve this.
 • Ginkgo Biloba (5 mg): You’ve likely heard of this nootropic before and it actually has a lot of science behind it in terms of its ability to boost brain function, particularly memory4. However, these results were the most profound in older adults and side effects in younger athletes are much more consistent.

So, while Bounce has its heart in the right place, the caffeine content isn’t enough to overcome the underdosed ingredients. Also, we aren’t fans of the 4 grams of added sugar, so we rated the formulation a 2 out of 5.

All in all, though, there aren’t a lot of vegan gummies out there, so if you adhere to that diet, you might be willing to sacrifice flavor to integrate Bounce gummies into your routine for a boost in energy levels.

Best Pre-Workout Gummy Texture: AXO Pre-Workout Gummies

Good for: Those looking for a tangible energy boost who don’t mind some added sugar

Best Texture

AXO Nutrition Pre-Workout Gummies

GGR Score: 3.25 starstarstarstarstar

Product Highlights

 • Vegan gummy pre-workout supplement
 • Gluten-free and non-GMO
 • Available in 1 flavor: Watermelon

Pros & Cons

Pros

 • In gummy form so no need to deal with powders and shaker bottles
 • Made in the United States in a GMP registered facility
 • Allergen-, gluten-, nut-, and dairy-free
 • Vegan

Cons

 • Very limited customer reviews
 • 1 serving = 5 gummies
 • Only 15 servings per container
 • Expensive at > $2 per serving
 • Only available in 1 flavor: Watermelon

Bottom Line

AXO Nutrition pre-workout gummies are vegan and gluten-free. AXO shares that you can take anywhere from 2 to 10 gummies depending on how much energy you require. They just caution not to take more than 15 gummies in a day. There are very limited customer reviews so we cannot speak to how customers feel about the gummies.

Based in San Diego, California, AXO makes its supplements in the USA with their pre-workout gummies being vegan, non-GMO, gluten-free, and made with natural ingredients. There’s only one flavor, Watermelon, and we had GGR Head of Content Nicole Davis, CPT, PN1-NC, try it out for us.

RELATED: Best Low-Caffeine Pre-Workout

“These are great for an energy boost and some extra focus,” Nicole states. “For those who don’t want to choke down a drink, it could be a good form of pre-workout.” As far as taste goes, we rated it a 4 out of 5. Nicole says, “Sweet, tastes like watermelon candy but the flavor is a bit faint. Not bad, though! I will also say it kinda of tastes like a vitamin as you chew it, but nothing awful.”

As far as texture, we gave it a 5 out of 5 rating. “If you’ve ever had fruit jellies from Trader Joe’s, these have a super similar size, shape, and even sugar coating,” Nicole reports. “They are a little more tough, which is fine as long as you can handle the large serving size.”

Speaking of serving size, we have to talk about that. One serving size of AXO gummies is a whopping five gummies. “I could see that getting rough after the third or fourth gummy,” Nicole chimes in. “If you’re looking for some tinglies and pumps, this isn’t the most efficient supplement to take in order to get them.”

AXO Pre-Workout Gummies with container.

And that’s because the formulation isn’t super great for the large serving size. It contains vitamin B12, which most people don’t need to supplement with if they eat even a moderate amount of animal protein, and chromium. AXO gummies contain the common pre-workout ingredients l-theanine and caffeine anhydrous for focus and energy, respectively.

It also contains Alpha GPC, which research shows can help improve muscular strength and power5. So, not bad, but not good either. Especially considering you have to chew on five gummies to get these ingredients in and the dosages could definitely be higher.

As a final knock, these things have almost 9 grams of added sugar per serving. If that doesn’t sound like a lot, just know that one Reese’s cup only has 8 grams of added sugar. Might be useful for a post-workout refuel, not so beneficial as a daily wellness supplement. With all of that in mind, we had to give a 1 out of 5 for formulation here.

These little guys are also $2.33 per serving, which is an insane price for gummies. So giving a 1-out-of-5 rating for price is a no brainer there. We acknowledge that gummies are likely more difficult to formulate than powder, but over $2 per serving is a lot for even the most high-quality supplements.

Other Pre-Workout Gummies We Researched

 • Animal Energy Performance Chews: Take our tester’s word for it with these: “These are pretty gross. Super chalky and powdery when you bite them, and the flavor is bad.”

How We Picked and Tested the Best Pre-Workout Gummies

As much fun as it was for our team to eat gummies to come up with these reviews, we didn’t do it all for noms. The brands on our list were chosen according to a specific criteria. In considering these factors, we took the following into account:

Ingredients

One of the biggest things you should consider when looking at a pre-workout gummy is how closely the formulation comes to a traditional pre-workout supplement. Though gummies are arguably more pleasant to consume, there’s a reason that the powder form of pre-workout is the most popular and dominant form on the market.

RELATED: Pre-Workout Nausea: What Causes It And How Can You Prevent It?

That’s because supplement companies can pack a lot more active ingredients like nitric oxide boosters, creatine monohydrate, and the branched chain amino acids we come to expect in a pre-workout supplement in a powder form. Given that gummies have to be bite sized, they can’t include nearly as much.

Our goal was therefore to choose brands that would mimic traditional pre-workout supplements in terms of formulation as closely as possible. We also chose formulations that varied in content and potency depending on what your specific goals are or the benefits you wish to get from taking a pre-workout, whether it be energy or muscle recovery.

Taste and Texture

Unless you’re taking supplements in a capsule, taste and texture are always factors when we are choosing sports nutrition supplements to recommend. If you are expected to take something every day, it had better taste enjoyable to some extent.

With gummies, we tried to avoid brands that were too sweet, not sweet enough, downright gross tasting, or that had a chalky, unpleasant texture. Again, the big reason a fitness buff might turn to energy gummies or pre-workout gummies is because they expect them to taste better than a powder or drink. So it’s a big factor.

Effects

Even if the effect was mild (which, to be blunt, you should expect if you decide to opt for a pre-workout gummy), we wanted to recommend products that made our testers actually feel a difference.

RELATED: Best Pump Supplements

Olympian Caine Wilkes eating some Olly Pre-Game Energize Gummies

It’s also important to be wary of placebo effects. So-called pre-workout gummies may just be packed with sugar and that pre-workout rush you feel is nothing more than a sugar high that’s followed promptly by a crash, just like an energy drink. So we had our testers take note of whether or not the gummies they tried actually had an effect on their athletic performance.

Benefits of Pre-Workout Gummies

The likes of creatine gummies and pre-workout in gummy form may not be something you’ve heard about until now, but there are some benefits of note to using this alternative form of pre-workout. Let’s take a look at some.

Easier to Take Than Powder

For those who have a real problem with chugging down pre-workout powder formulas, the potential to get the benefits of pre-workout in something that tastes like a gummy bear can be a game changer.

This is especially fitting if you aren’t one who’s looking for a high-stim supplement that’ll give skin splitting pumps or an insane energy boost from hundreds of milligrams of caffeine. That magnitude of jacked is unlikely to be contained in a gummy, after all. However, for those who don’t mind more of a mild boost, gummies are a great alternative pre-workout.

RELATED: Coffee vs Pre-Workout

More Convenient and Portable

As awesome as pre-workout powder can be, it does require you to have a source of water and a shaker bottle on you when you need them. If you’re someone who is constantly on the go, or just super forgetful, this can put a big damper on your day if you brought the tub of pre, but don’t have the tools to make your drink.

With gummies, they can be stored nearly anywhere and can be brought along with you with no auxiliary equipment needed.

May Work More Quickly

We still have a lot of science that needs to be conducted on pre-workout gummies since they are fairly new to the scene. However, it could be hypothesized that gummies are absorbed into the system more quickly than powder due to their method of delivery.

The reason for this is the same reason for the ill-advised trend of dry scooping protein powder and that’s because, when you drink something orally, it has to go through your digestive tract and then be absorbed into the bloodstream to exert its effects.

However, when you chew on something rather than drinking it quickly, it gets absorbed in the mucus membranes in the mouth which cuts out the middle-man of the GI tract.

Because of the mucosa’s high vascularization, meaning it contains a lot of superficial blood vessels, chemical compounds that are absorbed through the mouth’s mucus membranes are fast tracked directly to the bloodstream for much more rapid absorption6

This is why certain drugs that need to take effect quickly, such as a life-saving glucose tablet for diabetics or nausea medication to stop vomiting, are often available in a form that goes under the tongue. With this in mind, it makes sense to think gummies may work more quickly than powder. But actual research is needed to confirm this.

Dosing and Interactions

You should always take supplements exactly as they are directed on the label. Given that pre-workout gummies are a very new supplement, it’s difficult to nail down what the proper dosage should be.

However, if you take prescription medications, are pregnant, or are breastfeeding, you should check with your primary care provider to ensure you aren’t putting yourself at risk for interactions or complications.

Some gummies on this list also contain nitric oxide boosters and caffeine which can have a significant impact on the circulatory system. So, it is not recommended that you take these supplements if you have pre-existing heart conditions.

Looking down into an opened container of AXO Pre-Workout Gummies.

Finally, most of the gummies we found are quite underdosed in terms of active ingredients, so it may be tempting to take more than what is recommended in order to reach the effective doses. However, we strongly advise against this, especially with gummies that contain caffeine.

RELATED: Pre-Workout On An Empty Stomach: Smart Or Silly?

Not only will this likely expose you to way too much sugar, serving sizes are put in place by companies for a reason, and shouldn’t be exceeded based on your judgment alone. Remember, when it comes to supplements, more isn’t always better. If you are really concerned about getting your proper dosages in, then it may just be best to switch back to looking for a powder.

Third-Party Testing

The pickings are slim in terms of pre-workout gummy brands that are available, but not many of them are third-party tested for safety. So, if you are an athlete who is drug tested, you might want to stick with an NSF for Sport or Informed Choice powder for now until the market grows a bit more. For everyone else, we at GGR still always recommend choosing third-party tested sports nutrition supplements whenever possible.

Buying Guide: What to Look for in Pre-Workout Gummies

Though supplement gummies seem easier to navigate than something like protein powder, there are still some things to be wary of when selecting a brand to work into your routine. Here’s what we suggest you consider:

Dietary Preferences and Restrictions

If you have certain dietary restrictions where you restrict yourself to gluten-free or non-GMO foods, you’ll want to check the labels of your prospective pre-workout gummies. The most relevant dietary restriction to consider when choosing gummies, however, is if you follow a vegan diet.

RELATED: Best Gluten-Free Meal Delivery Services

Most gummies, whether pre-workout or a gummy bear, contain gelatin in order to maintain their chewy texture. The problem is that gelatin is made from collagen and collagen is sourced from animals, with the most common sources being collagen from the shells of crustaceans, or the bones and tendons of cows and pigs.

Given that that sounds like the farthest thing from vegan, make sure to check your ingredient list. You may also want to steer clear of gelatin-containing products if you have a shellfish allergy, as you may not know where the gelatin has been sourced from.

Added Sugar

When taking a supplement to support your fitness, weight loss, and wellness goals, it’s important to look at the big picture. One reason it’s not recommended to take an energy drink pre-workout as a caffeine source when you can have something natural like green tea or black coffee is because it’s sort of counterproductive to chug grams and grams of added sugars if you are exercising for health.

RELATED: The Best Sugar-Free Protein Powder

With gummies it’s no different. Sure, they are technically a supplement in a candy form which is the whole point, but you still want to minimize your exposure to too many inflammatory refined sugars as much as you can unless advised otherwise by a registered dietitian.

Cost vs Value

This should go without saying, but if you pay a pretty penny for something, you’d expect it to have an impact that’s equal to the price you paid on Amazon or otherwise. What we mean is, you should choose a pre-workout gummy that is priced the same as its value.

If you don’t want to spend a lot of cash on gummies and are OK with getting just a slight energy boost from a modest formulation for a cheap price, that’s great. However, if you see a hefty price tag on these things and it doesn’t have enough to offer in terms of meeting your goals, you’re going to want to look elsewhere.

FAQs About Pre-Workout Gummies

Generally speaking, gummies are not as good for a pre-workout as powder since gummies tend to contain a lot more added sugar and a lot less active ingredients due to their small size.

Force USA G15 Review (2024): Is This All-In-One Trainer Worth the Price? https://www.garagegymreviews.com/force-usa-g15-review https://www.garagegymreviews.com/force-usa-g15-review#respond Fri, 21 Jun 2024 02:47:45 +0000 https://www.garagegymreviews.com/?p=192298 feedback. There were multiple mentions of difficult assembly and many folks who think the upgrade kit is overpriced and should be included in the original package. Final Verdict …]]> It’s no secret we’re big fans of space-saving and multi-functional equipment—that’s what makes some of the best home gym equipment. We think it’s savvy for your space and wallet when a piece of equipment can function in more than one way.

Cue the all-in-one squat rack and functional trainer from Force USA where you can squat and bench press in addition to pull-ups or any number of cable exercises.

In this Force USA G15 review, we’re going to cover everything you can do on this multi-functional machine, what we liked, and what we’d like to see improved. Let’s get into it.

We’re Strength Training and Functional Trainer Experts

When you want to outfit your home gym with the best dumbbells, barbells, and weight plates, your friends at Garage Gym Reviews have you covered. We’ve tested, scored, and reviewed hundreds of pieces of strength training equipment.

For this Force USA G15 review, founder of GGR and OG product tester Coop Mitchell worked out on the functional trainer, assessed the multi-functional machine, and scored a variety of categories including the durability, weight stack, pulleys, and accessories.

 • Financing available
 • Free shipping

Cons

 • Expensive price tag

 • Entire unit weight limit under 1,000 lbs
 • 772-lb smith machine and chin up weight limit

Bottom Line

The Force USA G15 is a versatile 3-in-1 training machine for home gyms. You’ll have a functional trainer with plate-loaded capabilities and dual integrated 289-pound weight stacks. These weight stacks are interchangeable and offer 2:1 and 4:1 pulley ratios. The outside of the rack offers a half rack design for barbell movements like the squat and bench.

A Quick Look at the Force USA G15 Pro

Force USA manufactures pretty much everything you need to outfit your home gym, from barbells and bumper plates to battle ropes and plyo boxes. And the G15 Pro is not the only all-in-one functional trainer the brand offers. The Force USA G-series includes three plate-loaded models (G1, G3, and G10 Pro) and six different models with pin-loaded weight stacks (G6, G12, G15 Pro, X15, and G20 Pro).

The pin-loaded machines are remarkably similar with only a few differences in the specs and price. The G15 Pro that we’re exploring in this review is at the higher end of this spectrum priced around $5,500. You can expect to use the G15 Pro as a squat rack, functional trainer, Smith machine, chin-up or pull-up station, and a suspension trainer.

Before You Buy

 • Barbell lifts will take place outside of the cage with half spotter arms while exercises on the Smith machine are done inside the cage.
 • During the assembly process, there are two sets of cables (one for the front and one for the back of the power rack). Neither set is labeled, but one is slightly shorter than the other.
 • You’ll be able to easily change the cables from a 2:1 to 4:1 ratio. The cable travel length extends more with the higher ratio.
 • The Smith machine bar is offset, which allows you to start barbell exercises with little to no weight.

Force USA G15 Video Review

Is the Force USA G15 Worth It?

There are some aspects to the G15 Pro that Coop liked, but overall it didn’t blow him away. For the price we would like to see better quality components, cables, and accessories. Overall, Coop rates the value at 3.5 out of 5 stars.

However, there are some unique aspects that folks might really like and want to prioritize. First, the Smith machine is counter weighted, which means you can start any Smith machine exercise with basically no weight. This is ideal for high rep ranges, beginners, teenagers, and older adults.

Plus, the cables are interchangeable from a 2:1 ratio to a 4:1 weight ratio. This is ideal for the same reasons as the Smith machine features—you can have lighter starting weights for anyone who needs them. However, this feature may not be ideal for anyone who wants to feel the true weight of the dual 289-pound weight stacks.

Great for:

 • Strength training versatility
 • Training for all ages and skills
 • Folks limited on space

Not recommended for:

 • Budget-conscious garage gym owners
 • People who prefer plate-loaded machines
 • Folks who want to lift inside the power rack

Workout Experience With the Force USA G15

GGR expert tester, Coop Mitchell used the Smith machine and cable trolleys on the Force USA G15 to get the full experience. He also used the half rack on the G15 for barbell squats and overhead presses to see how it held up to traditional strength movements.

Man squatting on smith machine in Force USA G15

“I tested quite a few cable exercises to try different weight ranges and ranges of motion. I did chest flyes with both trolleys, triceps pushdowns with a triceps rope, lat pulldowns, and low rows,” says Coop.

During the testing process, Coop noticed the lack of knurling on the Smith machine bar and wished the brand put more effort into making it better for gripping. “The knurl is super passive and not going to allow for an adequate grip for the user if you were to go heavy on any Smith machine movements,” he says.

RELATED: Barbell Anatomy 101

That said, he thinks the counter-weighted Smith machine bar is ideal for families, noting that it can accommodate light starting weights for all skill levels and ages.

Footprint and Portability

The G15 is not a portable machine. It’s the kind of hefty equipment that gets assembled in the exact location you want it to stay. The weight is not disclosed on the website, but we know for sure the weight stacks alone are over 500 pounds. The G15 earns a 4-star rating in this category.

Force USA G15 all-in-one trainer

The footprint measures over 6 feet wide, over 4 feet deep, and roughly 7 feet tall. Before adding this to your cart, be sure to measure both the footprint and ceiling height of your home gym.

Durability and Construction

When it comes to the durability, stability, and overall construction the G15 earns 4 out of 5 stars. The machine is solid with heavy-duty metal and two huge weight stacks, but some features don’t add up to the high-end price tag of the G15.

Man moving J-hooks on Force USA G15

The 2-inch-by-2-inch uprights are constructed with 11-gauge rolled steel tubing, which is a solid frame for squat racks and power racks. It has a chrome finish, an ideal material for smooth transitions on the cable trolley. The uprights also feature laser-cut 1-inch hole spacing for the J-hooks.

The dual 289-pound weight stacks make the G15 feel locked to the ground. “This thing is a tank,” says Coop. “Once you get it assembled, it’ll essentially be stuck in place.”

Coop’s main callout and the reason he deducted a point in this category was the pulley material. “The pulleys are made from nylon and have decent movement, but the competitor brands offer aluminum pulleys and parts that provide a smoother pull and more durability,” he says.

RELATED: Major Fitness Power Rack Review

Versatility and Weight Stack

The Force USA G15 has 22 different height options for the cable trolley and more than double that amount for J-hook positions on the 2-inch-by-2-inch uprights. There are plenty of height adjustments for the Smith machine, too. However, most people won’t be able to perform standing overhead presses with the Smith machine, but most other movements should be fine.

During his assessment, Coop liked the pop-pin on the trolley because it’s adjustable with one hand. “It’s not as smooth of an adjustment as the REP system we’ve seen on the Ares or Athena, but it’s still pretty good,” says Coop.

RELATED: REP Fitness Athena Review

Overall, the versatility on the G15 earns a 4.5 out of 5 stars. You can pretty much do anything on this machine that you could do in a commercial grade squat rack or functional trainer. And with the dual 289-pound weight stacks, most folks will have enough weight for lower and upper body exercises.

“I wish the weight ratio was 1:1 for more effective resistance, but the weight stacks and 2:1 or 4:1 ratios will be adequate for most people working out at home,” says Coop.

Accessories

The G15 earns a score of 4 out of 5 stars for accessories, because it comes with a wide array of attachments suitable for both upper and lower body exercises. Coop docks a point because the spotter arms that come standard with the G15 purchase are pretty short and may not provide the safety of a full-length spotter arm for squatting or benching.

Product Highlights

 • All-in-one home gym machine
 • Functional trainer and squat rack
 • Smith machine
 • 2:1 pulley ratio
 • 14 attachments included
 • Even more add-ons available for purchase

Pros & Cons

Pros

 • Plate-loaded
 • Multi-grip pull up bar
 • Countless exercise selection
 • Includes variety of attachments

Cons

 • Steel gauge not disclosed
 • Entire unit weight limit under 1,000 lbs
 • 772-lb smith machine and chin up weight limit

Bottom Line

The Force USA G3 is an all-in-one home gym machine. It functions as a functional trainer with two pulleys, a smith machine, and a squat rack. It’s worth noting that the design of the G3 will have you barbell training on the outside of the rack, not within the rack. However, it comes with J-cups and spotter arms so you can squat and bench safely at home.

Bottom Line

The Force USA G20 All-In-One trainer is an impressive strength training machine that combines 11 strength systems in one compact and stable unit making it possible to do hundreds of exercises at home. Although it comes at a price point that is overwhelming for many home gym owners, this piece’s overall value is still remarkable considering all that is included.

We’ve personally tested the G3, G15, and G20 so it’s only natural to show you a side-by-side comparison to all three Force USA functional trainers. As Coop mentions this in the G15 full video review, there are tons of similarities between G-series models. So many similarities that we wanted to list the most important features you’ll see on all three models:

 • 2″ x 2″ uprights made with 11-gauge steel
 • A total 992-lb weight rating on the machine
 • Multigrip pull-up station
 • Smith machine
 • Functional trainer pulleys
 • Band pegs
 • Barbell storage
 • Weight plate storage
 • Lifetime frame warranty policies
 • Free shipping

The main differences in these three models are the price, footprint, weight stack, and pulley ratio. For your convenience, those specs are outlined below. For more details on the other two G-series machines we’ve tested, check out our in-depth reviews:

Customer Experience

If you need to contact Force USA about a product, order, or make a warranty claim, you’ll have to either call the phone number listed on the website or send an email through a general inquiry form. This brand doesn’t offer live chat or text options, which is why it scored a 3.5-out-of-5-star rating for general customer service.

That said, there is a 30-day, no-questions-asked return policy, which we like. You will be on the hook for shipping fees and packing the product back into its original packaging, however.

The G15 Pro comes with a lifetime warranty on the frame, 10 years on moving parts, and 1 year on upholstery and attachments. If you’re buying the G15 for a commercial gym or semi-private gym, the commercial warranty offers less time on all three categories.

Ordering and Assembling the Force USA G15

At checkout you’ll be able to pay with a credit card, Google Pay, Apple Pay, Shop Pay, or use Affirm for financing. The price of the G15 Pro includes freight truck shipping but doesn’t include professional assembly. For this service, you can expect to pay an additional $800, which our team thinks may be worth it.

Assembly expert and GGR Operations Manager Sam Presely says the G15 Pro is shipped on a crate that fits through a regular doorway, but it will take several people to handle the weight and carry it to your destination.

Sam says the G15 took about 10 hours to build, with a team of experienced equipment builders and assemblers. “For the average person you would need to budget for at least 20 man hours of time to get this assembled,” says Sam.

“Some of the parts arrive pre-assembled, which helps you with your set up time,” he says. “But the tricky part is that there are two different cables that have slightly different lengths. Neither are marked in the packaging, and if you were to mix them up you would have to start the assembly process over.”

Customer Reviews

On the Force USA website, the G15 Pro has a 4.7-out-of-5-star average rating. Most customers have glowing reviews, but there were a few customers with negative feedback. There were multiple mentions of difficult assembly and many folks who think the upgrade kit is overpriced and should be included in the original package.

Final Verdict of Our Force USA G15 Review

If you decide to go with the Force USA G15, you won’t be disappointed about the versatility. You’ll have the ability to complete many different exercises—both with barbells and the functional trainer—through various ranges of motion.

However, Coop has a hard time recommending the Force USA G15 because there are quite a few similar products on the market, priced considerably less. Coop suggests checking out our best functional trainer roundup for a better understanding of price, weight stacks, and training function.

Best Fiber Supplement for Pregnancy

Best Fiber Supplement for Pregnancy Overall: Metamucil 4-in-1

Good for: Pregnant people looking for a tasty solution to ease constipation with lots of soluble fiber

Best Overall

Metamucil 4-in-1 Fiber

GGR Score: 4.3 starstarstarstarstar

Product Highlights

 • Powder psyllium husk fiber supplement
 • Promotes digestive health and regularity
 • Orange flavor
 • Subscribe & Save option available
 • Sugar-free blend

Pros & Cons

Pros

 • Promotes healthy blood sugar levels
 • No added sugar
 • No.1 doctor recommended fiber, according to Metamucil
 • Gluten-free

Cons

 • Metamucil claims are based on small studies
 • Contains aspartame
 • Only 1 flavor

Bottom Line

Metamucil is a plant-based fiber supplement with good reviews for taste and effectiveness.

Metamucil 4-in-1 aims to lower cholesterol levels, enhance digestive health, support blood sugar regulation, and improve appetite control, all of which support a healthy pregnancy. The sugar-free, gluten-free fiber supplement is orange flavored and simply needs to be mixed with water to consume.

The primary ingredient in Metamucil 4-in-1 is psyllium husk, a dietary fiber rich in soluble fiber. Each serving contains 6 grams of fiber, and 5 of those are soluble fiber. Soluble fiber absorbs liquid and forms a gel-like substance in the digestive tract, helping to soften stool and promote regular bowel movements, which may come as a relief to the many pregnant people experiencing constipation.

Other ingredients include maltodextrin, a carbohydrate that improves consistency and texture, and citric acid, for improved shelf-life and flavor. Additionally, the product contains natural and artificial orange flavors, as well as artificial sweeteners and colors.

metamucil fiber

We rated the formulation a 2 out of 5, primarily due to the aspartame, an artificial sweetener. While the FDA and the American Academy of Pediatrics consider aspartame generally safe for pregnant individuals and their babies, some studies show mixed results. As with most ingredients, moderation is key, and aspartame in small amounts is unlikely to be harmful.

Lauren Strong, a GGR senior staff writer and CPT, tested Metamucil 4-in-1, rating the taste a 5 out of 5. “It tastes like Tang! It does feel a bit ‘full’ in your mouth, but fiber supps have the tendency to get thick. Overall, this was one of the easiest to get down,” she said. Lauren rated solubility a 4 out of 5.

I too have tried Metamucil 4-in-1 and enjoyed the taste. This product was easy to take consistently because it was delicious. However, as Lauren mentioned, the consistency is thick. I usually mixed mine in a cup with a spoon but would find leftover sludge at the bottom of the cup. A shaker bottle would probably improve mixability.

Finally, we rated the price a 5 out of 5. A two-tablespoon serving costs only $0.30, which is a steal compared to most other fiber supplements.

 • Effectively works to improve gut health
 • Combines algae greens and prebiotic fibers

Cons

 • Tastes bitter to some

Bottom Line

Combining an algae greens blend with prebiotic fibers, Prebiotic Greens is intended to improve digestion and health.

Transparent Labs is known for creating high-quality, third-party-tested products free from artificial ingredients and additives. Transparent Labs Prebiotic Greens is no exception. This product contains superfood ingredients high in prebiotic fiber and essential minerals.

Key ingredients include organic spirulina, organic chlorella, organic acacia fiber, green banana flour, Jerusalem artichoke fiber, and chicory root. Spirulina and chlorella are nutrient-dense algae known for containing powerful antioxidants, which may support immune health and reduce inflammation during pregnancy. Acacia fiber, green banana flour, Jerusalem artichoke fiber, and chicory root are the primary sources of fiber in Prebiotic Greens. These ingredients provide inulin, a soluble fiber that promotes bowel regularity and lowers cholesterol, as well as resistant starch, which acts as a prebiotic to support the growth of beneficial bacteria in the gut. Each serving provides 6 grams of dietary fiber, accounting for 21% of the recommended daily value for a 2000-calorie diet.

transparent labs prebiotic bottle in hand

Additional ingredients include malic acid, natural flavors, and stevia extract. The malic acid serves as a preservative, and the stevia extract is a natural sweetener. Overall, we rated formulation a 5 out of 5.

Taste didn’t rate quite as well, landing at a 3 out of 5. Amanda Capritto, a former GGR senior staff writer and a certified sports nutrition coach, shared, “This isn’t great, but it’s drinkable. If you mix it with orange juice that helps mask the grass flavor.” However, solubility was a solid 5 out of 5. “This is surprisingly smooth for a drink with fiber in it,” said Amanda.

This third-party tested fiber supplement is expensive, earning the cost per serving a 1 out of 5. Each scoop costs $1.50, which is high but may be justified by the use of organic ingredients and natural flavors and sweeteners.

The single ingredient, wheat dextrin, is a great source of soluble fiber. Soluble fiber can help promote digestive health, regulate blood sugar, and reduce cholesterol levels throughout pregnancy. Furthermore, wheat dextrin nourishes beneficial gut bacteria, supporting overall digestive health.

While we appreciate the simplicity of this product, we would have preferred a variety of fiber sources. Different types of fiber support various aspects of health. For this reason, we rated the formulation a 3 out of 5.

GGR Senior Staff Writer and CPT Lauren Strong tested Benefiber Unflavored and shared, “This is truly unflavored and very easy to get down. I’d mix it with something flavored, like juice, but it’s pretty good, and I noticed it helped with digestion.” She rated taste and flavor a perfect 5 out of 5.

GGR Score: 4 starstarstarstarstar

 • 17 grams of prebiotics
 • Bulletproof listed benefits: Eases digestion, feeds good gut bacteria, and supports immune system

Pros & Cons

Pros

 • Subscribe and save 20%

 • Mixed reviews on mixability

 • One container is not a month supply, only “about 20 servings”

Bottom Line

Bulletproof’s Innerfuel Prebiotic is a powder supplement with 17 grams of prebiotics per 2-scoop serving. This supplement is intended to ease digestion, feed and increase good gut bacteria, and support your immune system. Customer reviews of this product are mostly positive and users feel their digestion improved and their stomach discomfort decreased. Some customers noted that the powder did not mix well.

Bulletproof Innerfuel Prebiotic Powder aims to feed healthy gut bacteria for improved digestion and reduced gas and bloating. The versatile, unflavored supplement is made with only three ingredients, all of which provide substantial amounts of prebiotic fiber.

Larch arabinogalactan (derived from the Larch tree), acacia fiber (derived from the acacia tree), and guar gum (derived from the guar plant) are rich in prebiotic fibers. These plant-based fibers provide nourishment to beneficial bacteria in the gut, which is essential for maintaining a diverse and balanced microbiome. A healthy microbiome is important for a strong immune system, especially during pregnancy.

Considering the diverse fiber-packed ingredients and the exclusion of artificial ingredients, we rated the formulation a 5 out of 5.

Each serving contains a whopping 16 grams of fiber, which is 57% of the daily recommended value for a 2,000-calorie diet. If your current fiber intake is low, this amount might initially cause uncomfortable gastrointestinal symptoms. To avoid this, consider gradually increasing your fiber intake; you could start with half a scoop of this supplement and slowly work your way up.

Bulletproof Prebiotic

Amanda Capritto, a former GGR senior staff writer and a certified sports nutrition coach, tested Bulletproof Innerfuel Prebiotic Powder and rated the taste a 5 out of 5. “I’ve mixed it into protein shakes, coffee, and with greens and juice; I didn’t feel it altered the flavor of any beverage,” she said.

Solubility rated highly as well at a 4.5 out of 5. Amanda noted that the powder itself is grainy and chunky, but dissolved well when mixed with liquid. “I didn’t notice any off-putting textures once mixed into my beverage. No issues swallowing it either,” she shared.

Admittedly, the price of this supplement is high, and we rated the cost per serving a 1 out of 5. Each serving costs $2.00, which is likely out of budget for many consumers.

Bottom Line

If you're looking for a budget fiber supplement to help fill in the gaps in your diet, consider these Nutricost capsules. They're made with psyllium husk and Jerusalem artichoke and the product is third-party tested.

Nutricost Fiber Capsules are made with organic psyllium husk and organic Jerusalem artichoke, two excellent sources of dietary fiber. These gluten-free, non-GMO capsules offer a quick, convenient way to increase fiber intake that doesn’t involve mixing a drink.

Psyllium husk is a good source of soluble fiber, which supports bowel regularity and digestive health. Jerusalem artichoke contains inulin, a type of soluble fiber that acts as a prebiotic, feeding beneficial bacteria in the gut and enhancing overall digestive system health. We appreciate the simplicity of ingredients and combined fiber types in Nutricost Fiber Capsules and rated the formulation a 5 out of 5.

Each serving provides 3 grams of dietary fiber, which accounts for 11% of the recommended daily value for a 2,000-calorie diet. However, each serving consists of five capsules, which might be challenging if you have difficulty swallowing pills or are experiencing nausea during the first trimester.

According to customer reviews on the Nutricost website, consumers find these pills easy to swallow. They appreciate the high-quality fiber sources and report that the pills effectively reduce constipation.

Moreover, this supplement is extremely affordable, earning a 5-out-of-5-star rating for price per serving. At just $0.42 per serving, it’s an excellent option for budget-conscious shoppers.

Best Gummy Fiber Supplement for Pregnancy: OLLY Fiber Gummies

Good for: Pregnant people searching for a fiber gummy for improved digestive health and bowel regularity

Best Gummy

Olly Fiber Gummy Rings

GGR Score: 4.2 starstarstarstarstar

Product Highlights

 • Fiber supplement in gummy form
 • 5 g of fiber in one serving
 • Two gummies per serving
 • Berry Melon flavor

Pros & Cons

Pros

 • 5 g of fiber in 2 gummies
 • Tastes delicious
 • May be preferred to drinking a liquid supplement

Cons

 • Added sugar
 • Some customers found the gummy texture to be tough

Bottom Line

If chugging down a liquid fiber supplement isn't your cup of tea, the Olly fiber gummy rings could work for you. In two gummies you'll get 5 grams of fiber in a Berry Melon flavor. It's worth noting, though, that these have added sugar.

Olly Fiber Gummies are strawberry-watermelon flavored and may appeal to pregnant individuals who can’t stomach pills or powders. Each two-gummy serving offers 5 grams of fiber (18% daily value), a substantial boost to your overall daily fiber intake.

The soluble fiber in this product is derived from fructooligosaccharides (FOS), naturally found in fruits, vegetables, legumes, and other plants. FOS are prebiotic fibers that nourish beneficial gut bacteria, such as Bifidobacteria and Lactobacilli, promoting a diverse and healthy microbiome. Additionally, FOS can help increase stool bulk and support regular bowel movements.

Other ingredients include gelatin, pectin, lactic acid, and citric acid, which enhance the texture, shelf-life, and flavor of the supplement.

A hand holds some Olly Fiber Gummies.

Ideally, we prefer fiber supplements to contain multiple fiber ingredients, as different types of fibers offer a range of health benefits. Considering this and the 2 grams of added sugar per serving, we rated the formulation a 2 out of 5.

Customer reviews on the OLLY website reveal that consumers love the taste of these gummies and prefer them over chalky pills and powders. Some customers reported feeling gassier when they first started the supplement, which is a common experience when increasing fiber intake. GGR Senior Editor Erin Chancer, CPT, CNC, tried these and liked the flavor but said, “I have a pretty sensitive stomach, so I did notice some gastro-related side effects. Nothing too disruptive, but definitely a little uncomfortable as my body got used to the fiber.” She rated them a 4.5 out of 5 for taste and a 4 out of 5 for side effects.

Olly Fiber Gummies fall on the more affordable range of fiber supplements, and we rated the cost per serving a 4 out of 5. At $0.80 per serving, these third-party tested gummies may be a great option for pregnant women looking to boost their fiber intake without breaking the bank.

Other Fiber Supplements for Pregnancy We Researched

We tested several fiber supplements for pregnancy before narrowing it down to our top choices. Here are a few other products we tried that didn’t make our list, but may spark your interest.

 • Gainful: Gainful oat bran fiber consists of a single ingredient, oat bran, offering 5 grams of fiber per serving. While we appreciate its lack of artificial flavors, sweeteners, and colors, we found its earthy taste difficult to overlook. Even when mixed into flavorful beverages, its taste remained challenging to mask.
 • Natalist: Natalist psyllium husk fiber capsules are designed to reduce constipation and hemorrhoids—a common struggle during pregnancy. We admire the product’s use of all-natural ingredients, but its fiber content is lower (<3 grams per serving) than many other supplements we tested.
 • Garden of Life Dr. Formulated Organic Fiber: This supplement is made with five organic superfood ingredients that offer 5 grams of prebiotic fiber per serving. Our testers highly approve of its formulation but don’t love the taste.
 • Citrucel caplets: Similar to Nutricost Fiber Capsules, these caplets are affordable but only contain one type of fiber (methylcellulose).
 • Bellway SuperFiber + Fruit: This psyllium husk fiber supplement is made with natural ingredients and comes in two flavor options. While this tastes good at first, our testers found it gets thick very quickly.

How We Picked and Tested the Best Fiber Supplements for Pregnancy

Our expert team of certified personal trainers, health coaches, nutrition experts, CrossFit Level-1 Trainers, and weightlifting competitors have tried dozens of fiber supplements to narrow down the best fiber supplements for pregnancy. We prioritized products with a rich fiber content, varying fiber types, high-quality ingredients, and third-party testing.

Someone dumping a scoop of Transparent Labs Prebiotic Greens into a glass

We understand the importance of maintaining digestive health, a strong immune system, and stable blood sugar levels during pregnancy. Therefore, we focused on supplements with ingredients that support these benefits. Recognizing that pregnancy can bring unexpected changes such as fluctuating appetite and nausea, we also considered factors like taste, texture, and ease of consumption.

Benefits of Fiber Supplements for Pregnancy

There are several reasons a person who is pregnant may benefit from taking a fiber supplement. Here are the most common reasons taking a fiber supplement while pregnant could be a good idea.

Relieve Constipation

Constipation is common during pregnancy due to hormonal changes, increased pressure on the intestines from the growing uterus, iron in prenatal vitamins, and diet and lifestyle changes. Fiber supplements can help alleviate pregnancy constipation by promoting regular bowel movements, adding bulk to the stool, softening it, and making it easier to pass.

Reduce Hemorrhoids

Hemorrhoids are a common issue during pregnancy, often caused by constipation. Fiber helps by softening stools, making them easier to pass. This reduces the chance of developing hemorrhoids from straining during bowel movements.

Enhance Gut Health

Supplements with prebiotic fiber can help diversify and balance the gut microbiome, which is vital for digestive health and a strong immune system. Prebiotic fibers like inulin, fructooligosaccharides, and resistant starch provide nourishment to beneficial gut bacteria, which play many roles in maintaining good health.

Manage Blood Sugar

Gestational diabetes occurs only during pregnancy. Eating more soluble fiber can help control blood glucose (sugar) levels and may lower the risk of developing gestational diabetes. Soluble fiber slows down digestion and the absorption of nutrients, like sugar, into the blood. This helps prevent quick spikes in blood sugar and improves overall blood sugar control.

Dosing and Interactions

The Dietary Guidelines for Americans1 recommend the following daily fiber intakes based on age and gender:

 • Women ages 19-50: 25-28 g
 • Men ages 19-50: 31-34 g
 • Women ages 51 and older: 22 g
 • Men ages 51 and older: 28 g

The American Pregnancy Association2 recommends pregnant women consume between 25 to 30 grams of fiber daily by eating plenty of fiber-rich foods like fruits, vegetables, and whole grain cereals. A supplement may help you meet these recommendations, but should not replace a healthy diet.

A person drinking a Tone It Up Protein shake.

Some individuals may need to slowly increase their fiber intake to prevent uncomfortable gastrointestinal side effects like gas and bloating. Additionally, since fiber absorbs water to form a gel-like substance that aids in bowel regularity, it’s important to drink plenty of water as you increase your fiber intake. Not drinking enough water could result in dry, hard stools that are difficult to pass, as well as dehydration.

Fiber supplements may not be suitable for certain people with gastrointestinal disorders as they could exacerbate symptoms like gas, bloating, and abdominal pain. Always consult your ob/gyn before starting a new supplement while pregnant.

Third-Party Testing

We recommend selecting supplements that have undergone third-party testing for safety and quality. Since supplements are not regulated by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), third-party testing is important. It ensures the product is free from harmful levels of heavy metals and other contaminants, and it verifies that the ingredients listed on the label are what’s actually in the product.

Buying Guide: What to Look for in Fiber Supplements for Pregnancy

Searching for the best fiber supplement for pregnancy doesn’t need to be overwhelming. Here are our top tips for buying the right product for you:

 • Soluble and Insoluble Fiber: Look for supplements that include both types of fiber. Soluble fiber helps slow digestion, regulate blood sugar, and make stool softer, while insoluble fiber adds bulk to stool.
 • Prebiotic Fiber: Choose products that contain prebiotic fibers like inulin, fructooligosaccharides, or resistant starch. These fibers nourish beneficial gut bacteria and improve digestion. Ingredients such as bananas, Jerusalem artichoke, and chicory root are sources of these fibers.
 • Natural Ingredients: Opt for fiber supplements made with natural flavors, colors, and sweeteners. Avoid those with artificial ingredients and additives.
 • Form of Supplement: Select a supplement that’s easy for you to take during pregnancy. Some might prefer a powder, while others may find capsules or gummies more tolerable.
 • Price per Serving: Ensure the supplement fits within your budget so you can continue to purchase it throughout your pregnancy.
 • Third-Party Testing: Look for products that have been third-party tested to ensure safety and quality, giving you peace of mind while taking them during pregnancy.

A Quick Look at the Normatec Elite Review

Normatec is a prominent brand in the field of athletic recovery and rehabilitation, known primarily for its dynamic air compression technology. Originally founded in 1998 by Dr. Laura Jacobs, a physician with a Ph.D. in engineering, the goal of the technology was to treat breast cancer patients with a circulatory condition called lymphedema. After years of working with patients on the medical side of life, the brand expanded its scope to the athletic realm, developing products to enhance athletic recovery and performance. These devices, which include the Normatec boots, arm attachments, and hip attachments, are now used by some of the most elite athletes in the world, including basketball legend Lebron James, quarterback for the Kansas City Chiefs Patrick Mahomes, two-time CrossFit games champion Justin Medeiros, and pro surfer Kelly Slater.

In 2020, the company teamed up with Hyperice, another leading brand in the athletic recovery space known for products such as the Hyperice Hypervolt massage gun, and the Hyperice X knee and shoulder recovery devices. This collaboration has led to the creation of innovative products like the Normatec Elite, full-leg compression boots designed to enhance blood flow, reduce muscle soreness, and expedite recovery.

In this review, I’ll cover my firsthand experience using the Normatec Elite, detailing how it works and how it compares to other recovery tools on the market.

Before You Buy

 • Normatec can be used as both a warm-up and post-workout recovery system. Using it for 15-20 minutes at medium intensity before a workout can help increase circulation and reduce muscle stiffness. After a workout, 20-60 minutes of medium- to high-intensity treatment can aid recovery by improving circulation and lowering blood lactate levels.
 • The Normatec Elite isn’t full body and primarily targets the quads, hamstrings, and calves. If you’re not going on long runs, bike rides, or squatting heavy weights, then this particular product may not be best for you.
 • Normatec may also be beneficial in medical and therapeutic settings, such as helping individuals recover from certain types of injuries.
 • The price of $999 is a significant investment in your athletic performance and recovery. Be sure to evaluate your recovery needs, and how often you plan on using this device to justify the purchase.

Are the Normatec Elite Boots Worth It?

The Normatec Elite compression boots are an excellent investment for elite athletes, fitness enthusiasts, and anyone looking to enhance their recovery process using tech. This device is ideal for those who regularly engage in intense physical activity and need a reliable method to reduce muscle soreness, expedite recovery, and maintain peak performance.

A pair of Normatec Elite Recovery Legs being used on a couch.

However, for casual exercisers or those on a tight budget, the Normatec Elite, at $999, may not be the most cost-effective recovery option. Additionally, individuals who prefer hands-on recovery methods, like massage therapy or traditional stretching routines, may not want an automated compression device.

Great for:

 • Professional athletes seeking top-tier recovery tools to maintain peak performance
 • Fitness enthusiasts who engage in intense physical activity and want to reduce muscle soreness
 • Trainers, coaches, and physical therapists who manage athletes’ recovery routines and need reliable and effective equipment

Not recommended for:

 • Those who engage in light or infrequent exercise
 • Individuals who prefer traditional, hands-on recovery methods like massage therapy, yoga, or stretching
 • Budget-conscious consumers who need something cost effective

Experience Using the Normatec Elite

I’ve used various compression devices over the years, and without a doubt, the Normatec Elite is the simplest to use. There’s no setup or assembly required and you can put them on and start using them straight out of the box. My Elite came fully charged, and from unboxing to massaging took less than 5 minutes.

Looking at your legs in Normatec Elite Recovery Legs.

Here are a few things to note when using the Elite for the first time. Start by identifying the right and left legs—they are labeled above the control unit on each of the legs. For reference, the integrated control unit should be on the outside of your leg, not the inside. The power button is on the right side of the control units—just hold it for a second to turn on the two devices. You can then adjust the settings with three buttons, which you’ll only need to do on one of the control units because they are synced to one another. The level button adjusts the compression pressure and has seven levels that increase in intensity. The time button sets the duration of your session from 15 minutes up to an hour in 15-minute increments. Finally, the ZoneBoost button targets specific areas of the leg.

Once you have your settings ready, hit the start button and prepare for a relaxing and enjoyable massage. For your initial use, I suggest experimenting with different compression levels to find what suits you best. Note that you can change the pressure level during your session without stopping or resetting the device. I started at level three and worked up to level five after a few sessions. Even at level five, which provided excellent compression, I found the legs to be extremely comfortable.

One thing to note is that while the pump is working, which is about 75% of the time, it emits a low hum similar to a massage gun. It’s like white noise and I barely notice it after a few minutes. It’s also worth commenting on the battery life, which is designed to last up to 4 hours. However, I’ve used the Elite for over 6 hours at this point and still haven’t had to charge the device.

A close look at the controller for a pair of Normatec Elite Recovery Legs.

After your session is complete, be sure to let the legs deflate properly before unzipping to avoid any damage. Once deflated, unzip and remove your legs. I recommend wiping them down with a slightly damp washcloth as your legs can get a bit sweaty during use. After cleaning, rezip the legs, fold them into thirds, and store them in the convenient carrying case that comes with the device.

Materials and Size

The Hyperice website doesn’t specify the exact material used for the Normatec legs, so I reached out to their customer service team and they informed me it’s a “nylon diamond ripstop” fabric. This type of fabric has a tight weave that offers superior strength while still being very light weight, providing the Normatec legs with a premium feel.

Normatec Elite Recovery Legs

As far as the size, the Normatec Elite is available in three options, small (for heights up to 5 feet, 3 inches), medium (for heights from 5 feet, 4 inches to 6 feet, 3 inches), and large (for heights 6 feet, 4 inches and above), ensuring a fit for everyone. In addition, each leg weighs just over 3 pounds, making them extremely light and easy to put on by yourself.

Compression

For details regarding Normatec’s advanced compression technology, I interviewed Gilad Jacobs, Chief Innovation Officer at Hyperice and Founder of Normatec Recovery.

Jacobs says the science behind Normatec’s devices lies in its dynamic air compression technology, which uses a patented massage pattern to mimic the body’s natural physiology to enhance blood flow.

“The first mechanism (of the Normatec Elite) is the muscle pump of the gastrocnemius soleus, a pulsing action to get blood moving,” he explains. “Next up are the one-way valves on the veins and lymphatics which creates a directionality of flow, preventing gravity from bringing it (blood flow) right back down. Then we release the compression which is like peristalsis, the way that our body moves food and other things through our gut.”

Side view of a person wearing Normatec Elite Recovery Legs.

This dynamic pulsing action, and the constant compression and subsequent release of compression works to enhance blood flow, reduce muscle soreness, and expedite the recovery process.

The Normatec Elite offers seven levels of compression, ensuring you can find the perfect setting to meet your recovery needs. Personally, the highest I’ve gone is a five, which provided a powerful pressure that felt great—and I typically prefer the intensity of a deep-tissue massage. Additionally, the Elite features ZoneBoost technology, which allows for targeted compression by providing extra time and pressure to specific areas of the leg that need some extra attention. This is perfect for when you require focused recovery on a particular muscle group in the leg.

Battery

The company claims that the Elite boots have a battery life of up to four hours, but in my experience they far exceed this expectation. I’ve used the Elite legs for eight 45-minute sessions so far, and I still haven’t had to charge them. This impressive battery performance truly highlights how Normatec seeks to over-deliver for their consumers.

A good look at the Hyperice logo on a pair of Normatec Elite Recovery Legs.

The actual charging device is a standard wall-outlet charger that conveniently connects to both legs simultaneously. This means you can charge both boots at the same time without needing to charge them individually, a feature that I find particularly convenient and efficient.

Tech Capabilities and Conveniences

The Normatec Elite legs offer Bluetooth connectivity, enabling seamless integration with the Hyperice app on your smartphone. This allows you to easily customize your compression level, session duration, and ZoneBoost technology directly from your device.

Display on a pair of Normatec Elite Recovery Legs.

Furthermore, the legs sync effortlessly with each other. When you initiate a session by setting your preferences on one leg and pressing start, the other leg automatically synchronizes with these settings and begins operating accordingly. This streamlined synchronization enhances user convenience and ensures a hassle-free experience.

Bottom Line

A hands-off way to increase blood circulation and improve muscle recovery.

The key difference between the Normatec Elite and the Normatec-3 compression boots lies in the quality of life improvements.

The Normatec Elite offers consumers a seamless experience with two leg attachments, each of which has the control unit directly integrated into its side. This eliminates the need for a separate, standalone control unit and subsequent air hoses that are necessary components of the Normatec 3s. Moreover, the Elite boasts a slightly improved battery life, which enhances the usability between charges. Beyond these improvements, both models are designed to deliver identical compression performance, as well as incorporate the ZoneBoost technology for targeted recovery.

Overall, the Normatec Elite is a phenomenal compression therapy device that may help speed up recovery and improve athletic performance. With seven levels of compression, the advanced ZoneBoost technology, and substantial quality of life improvements over the Normatec-3s (no separate control unit or hoses), we highly recommend this product for those who engage in intense physical activity and can justify the high price for a recovery product like this.

Normatec Elite: FAQs

Do Normatecs actually work?

While ongoing research continues to explore the benefits of pneumatic compression therapy devices like the Normatec Elite, existing studies indicate1 their potential to reduce delayed-onset muscle soreness (DOMS) and enhance recovery. Many users, myself included, have reported noticeable improvements in their recovery after integrating Normatec into their regular routine. Personally, I’ve found that my lower body feels significantly less fatigued following long runs or intense squat sessions after using the device.

Is the Hyperice Normatec worth it?

If you’re a dedicated athlete or fitness enthusiast who regularly engages in intense physical activity, then the Normatec Elite may be a worthwhile investment to enhance your recovery and performance. However, given its price tag, it’s essential to weigh the investment against your budget and recovery needs. If you’re seeking similar benefits at a slightly lower cost, the Normatec-3 model is designed to provide identical compression and may be a more budget-friendly option.

Does Normatec do lymphatic drainage?

Yes, the Normatec Elite can aid in lymphatic drainage. In fact, that is what this device was originally designed for. The compression provided by Normatec devices mimics the body’s natural muscle contractions, which plays a key role in lymphatic circulation. However, it’s important to consult with a healthcare professional to determine the appropriate use of a device such as the Normatec Elite for specific lymphatic issues.
